i have a ford zodiac that keeps misfiring, any ideas please???? :S

Hi, welcome to the forum. Have you investigated and/or replaced any parts yet, or are you just beginning to look at it??

Misfires can be tricky to pin down, and usually fall into one of the following categories:

- electrical (plugs, HT leads, points, condenser, coil, distributor & cap etc)
- fuel (fuel starvation - pump or blockages in the carb etc)
- engine (compressions, head gasket etc)

Does it miss at all revs and speeds, or just when you're driving and trying to accelerate?? is it ok when the engine is cold, getting worse as things warm up? Hopefully a few members will chime in with their thoughts as the day progresses, but for starters the list above will give you something ideas hopefully.

thank you for replying so quickly, there isn't enough fuel going through it, the back two cylinders aren't firing?

so those 2 spark plugs stay dry do they?
perhaps the compression on those 2 cylinders is a bit down then, perhaps due to burnt valves, head gasket on its way out etc. A compression test would be a good move if you can arrange it.

if the plugs are getting wet, I'd be looking at the plugs and leads, checking plug gaps and so on

yeh they do stay dry, i know the head gasket needs to be changed at some point. looked at the plugs, leads etc, they all seem fine. looking at the fuel at the moment. it doesn't seem to be getting through?

Another possibility, in addition to the head gasket, is a leak on the induction side - perhaps around the inlet manifold gasket. If you know that the head gasket is dodgy though then I'd be looking to get that fixed first, then see if matters improve. Skim the head while its off too, in case it has warped a little (hard to tell just by looking at the head once removed).

It's always worth replacing the in-line fuel filter - should be visible under the hood somewhere.
