Hi all.

Does anyone have any reccommendations of what would be a cheap classic car to buy, run, insure (young driver), tax, get parts for, etc? And which cars are most likely to last with the least work?

I'm thinking of something on the lines of a Triumph, MG Midget or Hilman Minx kind of size/style (slightly fun and sporty), preferably open top.

If I decide to go ahead then I wouldn't be looking to buy until the end of August anyway, no doubt, so I'm not really after specific listings of cars on eBay or offers of cars, etc, just some general advice.

Thanks. Smile

Triumphs are definitely value for money and well served as far as parts and specialists go
TRs, Spitfire and GT6 good sporty choices

Any idea what sort of price range I'd be looking at? Smile I've seen some on eBay near me... it looks like it might be a good place to look when I get around to it.

Spitfires a maximum of 4k will be very nice as low as 500quid for a restoration project
Heralds/vitesse prices slightly lower
What about French cars like the old renaults and citroen, something like a 2CV are very easy to ook after wel supported and reasonably cheap to buy

How are you at welding??

If good is the answer

A mini perhaps, cheap parts group 2 insurance, beat an audi tt quatro around the bends, sorry I didn't sugest that....

Lots of parts, remanufactures, nos, and second hand, and cheap to buy in the begining!

That is how I started, or do you fancy something older?

What kind of age of car are you thinking of?

Cheers

Dave

Hmm... I'm not sure if I'd really like a taller car, if you understand what I mean. Things like 2CVs, Morris Minors, VW Beatles, etc are all the wrong shape for me... Smile

I think "inexperienced and likely to start a fire" might be a good answer there. Smile

Age isn't really an issue. Something from the early 80s or older would be a must I guess - I'm just after something fun that I can also take to shows if I have the time.

Sporty cars might be tricky to insure, one decent alternative is a Herald 12/50 - this model came with the full length sunroof as standard. Alternatively find a normal Herald and then bolt the roof assembly from a 12/50 onto it. Cheaper than a convertible but still open air motoring(ish!). Plus the Herald engine is easily tuneable should the need arise Smile

I wouldn't mind a closed or something else along those lines either, really. A small car would be preferable.

Maybe I should wait until nearer the time then just see what I can get hold of, hehe. Smile

Thanks.

Well, all pre-'73 cars are tax exempt, so worth considering.
I'm assuming you're in England...er, sorry, Britain Laughing Ooops, sorry, wrong again....er....the United Kingdom, so something manufactured here may be preferable, simply due to the availability of parts.

'United' Kingdom eh?... that's certainly a misnomer too! Laughing
The part I read in your original post Lawrence that referred to " which cars are most likely to last with the least work?" may be counter to classic car ownership.
I agree with the others that a Herald is a good bet for a starter classic, engine spares are available, and there are plenty of cars around to pick from, but whatever you finally choose you will have to put the hours in on maintenance, they are old cars.

Cool All metal rusts no matter what car it is. Still a few TCs on the road but they are sluggish and the road holding is a disaster unless the Ital front suspension is fitted...Give me the jolly old 1300 A Series engine anyday.

Cool Or Lawrence (same christian name as me nobody ever calls me by that. I always get Larry.) You could always go for an Escort or an Avenger Tiger. I know where there is a Talbot Horizon convertible not many of them on the go. Its up to yourself really what you fancy. There are hundreds to pick from.
