|
|
Though I have already done some work on my latest project, the restoration began properly this morning.
To start with, a little history. This first picture shows the mileage at the last service in June 1972....12900km. Mileage here is always written in ''swedish miles'' ie 10km.
The interior was removed, rust brushed away, and a few hits with a pointed hammer revealed what rust there is, around the jacking points on both sides, as per photos....
First, the driver (left) side....
Now the passenger side...
If the quality of a car was judged by the amount of fasteners used to hold the front seat in place, then this would win, 12 bolts and nuts, and 8 self tappers!
As I pointed out in another topic, according to the Glas club, the car is one of the very first, from 1958/59 production year. |

Philosopher as well....I am inpressed. The first step was really last week, when I cleaned off the engine and did a little bit of welding, not to mention find out a bit of its history.
I thought that the correct quote thoughwas ''even the longest journey starts with a small step''? |

Thats what I was thinking. The welding that I mentioned was difficult enough to get at with the welder, let alone a camera. The floor should be easier though. I hope! |

UJ I am a frequent reader of the Tao Teh Jing pronounced (DOW DAY JING) by Lao Tsu
He is attributed with it in about 600BC
"A journey of a thousand miles began with a single step".
Chinese philosophy aside good luck
since you purchased yours I have seen 2 and a couple for sale in the French classic car magazines _________________ www.OldFrenchCars.com

Every woman thats seen it up to now has said the same thing. Maybe its the ultimate bird puller!
I hope none of our female members see that comment! I actually call it by the same name as one of them now...
Am I digging the hole deeper? |

Continuing with the stripdown today, an unusual problem turned up. One that I can guarantee has never happened to someone that has restored a british or american car. I realised that the nuts and bolts are to the old metric standard. This is likely to present a lot of problems during assembly, as any that need to be replaced are no longer available....
Seems funny in a way.... |

I bet that I am the only one on here that actually sold Goggomobiles for a living. They were mostly the 400s with the odd coupe. We only had one like yours UJ and many motor dealers made a bet with us that we would never sell it. We did though. It was the only 700 that I have ever seen.
I remember that the 400 had a very strange gearchange. It had the normal H pattern but turned through 90 degrees so the lever went left to right instead of front to back.
We also sold Bond Minicars, Isettas, Reliants as well. The firm was mainly a motorcycle dealership distributing BSA and James. They did move onto cars with Fiat.
Happy days. |
