The Morris 8 Chassis is away being blast cleaned at the moment at a place that only about a mile from my house, they are going to do it on a dry day (so may get it back this year given our current weather Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes ) I'll etch prime it and then put a black top coat on.

Question
Want it to look "original" so pretty sure the black would not be high gloss? but also not a matt finish. Can I get paint made up in a semi gloss ? if so is there a correct term for the shade?

Cheers Dave

AFAIK you can have a matting agent added to paints you are having mixed, so that you avoid the sticky-sticky new look. I can give you the contact details for the guys supplying the Dodge paint if you like, they'd be able to sort you out with the right stuff.

I dropped the Dodge screenframe off yesterday at the local s/blasters, probably the same place Smile

The correct finish applied direct over bare metal (although phosphated would be even better) is Clorinated chassis black.

Frosts sell it

Both those above are the same stuff and far superior to Hammerite as well as cheaper

I wouldn't use gloss. I've ordered some of the Frost one, I'll post how it goes. I don't mind the satin smoothrite, but I hear it goes brittle. I've not found that myself yet though.

Satin Smoothrite does harden and chip/flake off after 6-12 months. Proper Chassis Black is semi-gloss when fresh but dulls after a few months but not to a full satin finish.

The Frosts is nearest modern equivalent I think but the other one is likely to weather to same state if its the proper stuff

Theres also the Bill Hirsch chassis paint as well. Personally I could think of either using powder coating, which is rather exact in terms of sheen, or over a media blasted chassis a Zinc base, with epoxy Mastic over that, and then something like black Dinitrol. Do it that way and it will never need doing again...

Wickes sell a mattish black paint that they call Wrought Iron paint. It makes similar claims as does Hammerite, but is a lot cheaper, easier to clean from brushes and seems to stand up to weather fairly well. Anyone else tried using it (other than on their fence)??
