There is, or was, a small book called "Where's It From, When Was It Issued" by Noel Woodall. My copy is dated 1976 and was published by Transport Bookman Publications, who seem to be still around (Tel 0208 560 2666).
Obviously it doesn't give you exact dates, but shows the issuing council, and when each series was issued, so you can make a guess at the date from how far down the series the number you are looking at is. |

Rick
I have a 35000 line excel sheet that gives all the issue dates for each letter series.
As Cnut says you can work out the approximate month of issue for the exact reg no you are seeking.
It is too big to attach to an email in one go so I'll send it split into two files attached to two emails. All you have to do is to copy one into the other and then you have the full record.
If you want to put in on your website feel free, but some sort of search mechanism is must. Might drive yet more traffic your way.
If anyone else is interested in their own copy send me a pm with your email address. _________________ Brian

Further to Brian's incredibly useful spreadsheets - if you can locate a copy of (but be aware they're as rare as hen's teeth) "Glass's Index of Registration Numbers 1929 - 1965" is a very useful book.
Originally published by Glass's Guide Service Ltd in 1965 it is the registration number spotters bible.
Down side is sadly nothing before 1929, so it'll still be old motoring manuals, etc for broad brush-strokes dates pre-29.

My spreadsheets run from 1904, the start of UK registrations, through to approximately 1972-3.
If any one finds details of issues from 1972 onwards, please let me know and I will try to add the later issues to my list. _________________ Brian

Guy
The town and county identifiers listed in your link are available all over the net, and even in old AA books up to the 60's.
My list tells you when each three letter series was issued by the town or county, both as NNN### and ###NNN styles.
It is now sent out as a zip file rather than in two files. _________________ Brian

Don't I remember old AA annuals giving this info too? I seem to recall using one on the back seat of Dad's car in the 1950s. |

Found a free source of dates of registration too! They used to sell a book on them all but I don't see it listed any more. However, you can find out what you need for free here:-
