Got thinking about this the other day when the Prince of darkness flasher unit went on the blink - except it wouldn't blink! So, looked at the usual Jaguar suspects and they wanted £25. Got the same thing from the Moggie 1000 site for a fiver. Then if memory serves there was the Porker 924 brakes which came off a VW van and were one third of the price. I'm sure you can come up with others too.

This certainly applies on Ebay. I recently needed some points. When I trawled using the Lucas part reference I found the same dealer listing the same points for various vehicles at different prices depending on the degree of exotica!

Back in the early seventies I had a mark 2 Jag as an everyday work vehicle and I hit a very deep pothole on a country road, breaking both the shock absorbing blocks that fit between the body and the sub frame at the front of the car. After getting a bank loan type quote from the Jag dealers, a friend advised me they were bog standard, off the shelf Holden engine mounts at a fraction of the price!

The back lights fitted to an Austin A40 Farina also fit late examples of Wolseley 1500/Riley 1.5, and also the early Gilberns.

Chrome door strips from an A40 Devon also fit the Swallow Doretti!

For classic American cars (and some European) you can buy "Interchange Manuals" that detail all the interchangable parts from one make to another.

Reading this I thought its funny how things have changed.... years ago common parts were more minor items like, len's , switches, gauges etc, these days it major items like floorpans, engines and gearbox's that are shared.

I think that's often been the case; I'm thinking of BMC in particular where engines, suspension, transmissions were shared across a whole variety of models from cars and vans to even boats (B series engine).

A friend is doing up a serier 2 minor and needed some park light lenses and I just happened to have some on an A 40 devon but the surprising thing was the same day I spotted the same lens on a DB5 Aston Martin, I bet they would want more for it.
Back in the 70s the company I was doing my aprenticeship with were doing a transmission on a Rolls Royce Silver Shadow and the epicyclic gear set needed replacing so they were quoted $1500 dollars (at the time about the price of a mini) through the factory parts channel. The car was out of warranty (just) and the owner was not happy, so they shot off down to the local "Holden" dealers and bought the same unit off GM to fit a Cadilac for about $200.

I was thinking more across not related firms; today Fiat and Vauxhall share floorpans, Ford and Peugot share engines, BMW and GM Europe have also shared engines I bet there are loads more!
