im in the middle of stripping down my mini interior, and i have come to the top dash rail. there are 3 bolts holding it on, and the bolts are so rusty, they're spinning the bolts. there doesnt seem to be anyway of getting to the bolts!
any advice on getting the bolts off?
cheers _________________ 1985 Mini Mayfare (1275)

Have you got enough room to get a small nut splitter in there? |

I have had this trouble - I did not have a Dremel drill then but I think this would have cut a slot in the side of the nut. In the end I used a pair of strong side wire cutters - you need a strong grip though
I did get one nut off with a small quarter drive inch socket by tightnening it up and breaking off the the stud.
I am certain they 5/16th AF or 8mm if pushed (2BA will also fit well) _________________ Rover P2

A blowlamp would melt the foam inside the dash rail too - it would allow access to the back of the stud to drill it out _________________ Rover P2

As far as I can remember you can strip the dials and back card on the dash so you would get a much better access to the bolts and nuts of the upper dash rail!!
can you use a heat gun instead, it did the trick once for me but it would still damage the foam!!
can you get soemone else to help a friend could try and grip the bolt with a gripper and you could try turning the nut with a spanner!! |
