This must be the oldest scrappage victim so far. A very tidy looking Triumph Mayflower has just been traded in for scrappage at a BMW dealership in Dumfriesshire. Apparantly the fate of scrappage victims is dealt with by BMW UK, not the individual dealer, so there is possibly still hope for this one....I hope so

I hope it does get saved, another ridiculous scheme that hasn't been thought through properly!! Such a shame there seems to be a few perfectly good classics been traded-in this way!! |

Yes, BMW still own the Triumph and Riley names (and may well also own Wolseley, Morris, Vanden Plas, Standard...., but they don't admit to that!) |

I am really choked to see such a wonderful car join the scrappage scheme, they must surely would have achieved the £2000 asking price if tendered out locally or even on line! I fear a lot of others will perish the same way---leaving a cavernous gap in the classic domain.
Cheers--Ray the Rocker.... |

I assume the Triumph owner sold the original number as it now has a new number. So he probably has done rather well out of it. Not like the other scrappage victim I heard of this week. An elderly gent put his 1960 car in for the scheme and no doubt thought he had done well getting £2000 off some new Eurobox, but he did not have the foresight to retain the number, which he could have sold for £1500-£3000.
I will be glad when this scheme is done and gone...... _________________ 1964 International Harvester |

A whisper reached me today that there may be a scam going on with some of these older cars. The owner is receiving £'s through the scheme and also £'s under the table. The vehicle is never scrapped but given a new I.D..
Any thoughts on this, there is always someone who can find an angle.. |

OK it is illegal, but as long as it is scrappage victims being reregistered *I* don't have a problem with that, if it means a classic car is saved. The trouble is the large amount of stolen cars being reregistered in this way, using the identities of similar, wrecked cars.
Obviously it would make it much easier if the government could relax the Certificate of Destruction rules so that scrappage victims could be legally saved _________________ Richard Hughes |

an interesting thought on this: I thought that the scrappage scheme was supposed to be a boost for the economy. Which benefits the economy most, to trade in for destruction a Moggie minor say and replace it with a Kia Picanto, thereby boosting the economy of korea or wherever or enable the Moggie to go to an enthusiast who is likely to boost the BRITISH economy by a couple of thousand £ as he restores it??
Another well thought out sound bite that unfortunately grew legs this time!!

re the mayf;lower. What a disaster - its timethe scrappage scheme had a ban on over 20 year olds. Rethis car, looking at its re-registration, can't help thinking the car was bought for its original reg number by someone with no interest in our motoring heritage. |

I guess scrapped means technicaly scrapped ie the ID is gone, if the scrapman can make more by selling on a car with no id than than crushing it I'm sure he will, and don't see why this is breaking the law?
Putting it back on the road with a false identity would be breaking the law, but I sure this has been happening with classics for many a year.....
