Hi.No essay tonight, just a quick point of interest. Since the unseasonal weather re-appeared again, I got the Pop out, and decided to clean the inside. I removed the rear seat squab, and attached to one of the springs was this tag:
Obviously the company supplied the springing for the seats, but what happened to them? I`ve google searched it, but to no avail. Can anyone shed any light on it? I`ll be very interested. Cheers... |

A product of
Crosby Spring Interiors Ltd.
St. Helens, Lancashire,
England. |

The single story sprawling factory builings were in sighting distance of where we live but whole site demolished 10 years ago but is still being redeveloped with modern semis/terraces of 2/3 story much the same as the ones that surrounded the factory and large tenement mill which were built at the end of the 19C. The mill is now stylish apartments but it with its landmark blue brick fancy top chimney stack can be seen for miles even from the M1
My mother worked in the payroll dept from 1973 to 1992.
All sorts of springs were made for the upholstery firms round here but they also supplied almost all UK car producers eg Ford BL Rootes and Vauxhall. If seats have sprung inreriors which quality seats had then they are likely to be Lace Webb's
Became part of Tinsley Wire Industries Ltd (TWIL) of Sheffield which used to be next to the cooling toweres at side of the M1 there _________________ Rover P2

The streets were a terrible place to drive round whether car/pushbike or motor bike as there were loads of broken sporting pieces/sharp wires far worse than nails and screws for causing punctures.
Had regular fires in the paint shop (black to keep the springs from rusting!) - One was during the firemans strike in 1976(?) when the Green Goddesses turned out - caused a lot of damage before the regulars got there _________________ Rover P2

Mate of mine was maintenance engineer at Lace Webb in the 70's. It was the main employer in sandiacre. There has been a lot of seat related industries in Nottingham as there were factories at Triumph Road (Cox TI? I think) may have been associated with Raleigh. Also Lear in Glaisdale drive Bilborough Notts made seats and several industrial units there made bits for them. |
