Ryde Garage, September 1939.

This monthly calendar cum desk blotter dates to September 1939, and could well have been the last calendar issued by Ryde Garage until the war had ended some six years later, assuming the business survived the conflict. Ryde Garage was located on Victoria Street, Ryde, Isle of Wight, and the proprietors named as Downing and Donovan. An address on Union Street was also given. The blotter features a view of Edinburgh castle, along with an illustration showing an Exide Batteries Service Station sign, and a photograph of a pre-war Standard Flying 8.
A Ryde Garage desk blotter from 1939
Every month, it seems, Ryde Garage gave away these blotters, each of which incorporated a pearl of wisdom relating to motoring. This month's article was headed "A Laid-Aside Car is a Liability" ...
"Nothing is more useless than a car that will not run, and our endeavour with all our customers is to keep their cars out of our Garage, on the road, at the service of the owners all the time.
A sick car needs more than a tonic, it requires expert "mending" and here you will find the perfect service you need for hard work on the roads."
