FBHVC Press release

Drive it Day, on St George's Day, 2006

[Return to the main Press Releases page]

(Ed's note: I read about this interesting idea in The Automobile recently, so contacted the FBHVC - Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs - to find out more and give this idea, for a national 'Drive It' day, some publicity on oldclassiccar. The basic idea is to raise the profile of classic and vintage car ownership with the public at large. There are numerous events taking part on the 23rd April 2006, which is also St. George's Day this year. So we're all being encourage to use our classic cars on this day, whether as part of an organised event, or simply just going out for a drive and raising the profile of vehicle preservation. Sounds like an excellent idea to me .. the official press release from FBHVC is below.. )

DRIVE IT – RIDE IT – USE IT DAY

23 April

23 April should see more lovingly cherished old vehicles on the roads of Britain than on any one single day, ever, because the Federation of British Historic Vehicle clubs has designated 23 April the day on which the British historic vehicle movement puts itself on show – on the road.

The preservation of our road transport heritage lies almost entirely in the hands of individual enthusiasts. Without the freedom to use their vehicles, there would be no incentive to preserve them in working order and a very large part of our national heritage would soon be lost to decay.

The Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs, which exists to uphold that all-important freedom, is encouraging owners to give the public a glimpse of Britain’s fascinating road transport heritage by taking it out to them.

It’s not necessary for owners to go to a show or take part in an event, FBHVC just wants them to use their old vehicles so they can be seen by the public. If the vehicle is suitable it can be used instead of modern transport for daily activity.

(23 April was chosen for Drive It Day because it was on that day in 1900 that the 1,000 mile trial started, generating huge public interest in motorised travel. Drive It Day is part of an ongoing campaign to raise public awareness of the importance of the historic vehicle movement. Aside from heritage considerations, initial indications from a survey that is currently underway show the movement’s annual worth to the national economy to be in excess of £2 billion.)
