I was at the 50th Anniversary celebrations of the Hillman Imp this morning at the old manufacturing plant in Linwood. It was an Imp spotters mecca, probably every version ever built was there with at least 50 of them parked in front of the original office block.

The place was packed with owners and enthusiasts alike, one all the way from California and two others from Germany. Once I get the pictures loaded into my computer I'll post them in a new thread as I don't want to hi-jack ukdave's thread subject. Wink

I think the BBC are guilty of building a story around a catchy title.

It wasn't just Linwood, the location or the car.

In my opinion, society, corporate greed and the idea that if someone gets a huge salary or is elevated into a Government position then they must know what they are doing, caused the downfall of not just Linwood.

Even today we get new models with basic things that don't work properly.

Although door handles and switches etc have been around for years, someone re-designs them and within short order, they fail.

This is from a pre-release document for the 2013 MY Range Rover.

ISSUE: If the driver's door is closed at the exact time as the transit relay cuts power to the car and the door is 'soft closing', the soft close lever in the door latch may block the release of the latch claw from the door striker and thus prevent the door from opening externally.

As the vehicle will be in transport mode all doors except the driver's door will be locked, therefore if this issue occurs there will be no external access via any other door to allow access to the hazard warning switch to wake the car and allow the driver's door soft close motor to recover.

CAUSE: Transit relay cuts the power to the soft close motor causing the soft close lever in the door latch to block the release of the latch claw from the door striker and thus prevent the door from opening until the hazard warning switch is pressed.

The soft close motor is a standalone module and therefore does not receive transport mode in order to inhibit operation during transport.

ACTION: All dealers and transport users are asked to ensure they have pressed the hazard switch and exited the vehicle, fully closing the door within 15 seconds to prevent the vehicle remaining in locked condition which then cannot manually be released.

It was the unions that closed the place eventually. One of my workmen worked there in the late sixties till 1981. He said that it was normal for numerous stoppages nearly every day due to some pedantic complaints. He tells me that when on nightshift the vast majority went for a sleep on top of the locker rooms. Consequently the quality of the workmanship suffered. Same to a degree with the Albion Motorworks here in Glasgow, the unions were a yoke round the manufacturers neck.
