Two-door coupe versions of mainstream saloons commonly feature(d) in sales catalogues in the USA, but seem to be less common in ranges of cars built and sold in the UK.
I thought it's time we had a thread that celebrates two-door versions of cars more often seen in four-door guise.
For starters, one of the few 1970s cars that floats my boat - the XJC. As a nipper I'd regularly pop into the local BL dealership to snaffle a few brochures (most of which I still have). Two or three of these brochures feature the XJC, which I think is a stunning looking set of wheels. They may rot like crazy, and have draughty window frames, but I'd still have one.
Going further back in time, I'd love to own a Model A Coupe.

Back in the day (early 80's) a mate had an XJC, as you say, it was a lovely car but the speed it rotted was amazing.
Things got so bad that when it needed brake work on the rear (in-board disks I seem to remember) he scrapped it!

I love coupes, and they have been a big part of my life
My first was an Austin Seven (not this one, but one just like it):
I've owned seven or eight Heralds:
Then there was my Lancia Appia:
And the Rover Sterling:
Does the Volvo 480 qualify - I've had three of those?
and that's apart from my brother's Riley Lincock:
and the Sunbeam Rapier I used to navigate in rallies:
Coupes? Did I say I love 'em! |

Years ago I had a 2 door 1965 Ford Corsair. I have never seen another one. _________________ The Clan Chieftain |

A little rare, destined for the export market.

Without wishing to pour cold water on anyone's enthusiasm for two door coupes; while I generally prefer their appearance it has to be said that you don't want one if rear passengers are to be carried frequently. It's not just the bother of getting people in and out of the back, they pose a more serious danger if involved in an accident. There is no escape from the back.
I have driven various coupes but luckily no accidents. |

I guess that's a problem with any 2-door car. The Rover was the only coupe I have owned that could be considered a four seater, but apart from one occasion when I carried three small kids in the back of the Austin, I don't think I have ever had a back seat passenger of any size in any of mine! The Austin, Heralds and Lancia were only 2-seaters anyway, with no back seat, just carpeted shelves! |

Saftey aside, IMHO , 2 door cars generally look better than 4 door, whether classic or modern.

Rick. That was when it was owned by the MMOC and was a heap of s... when I bought it. I picked it up at Abington services on the M74. The n/s floor was rotten, the back spring hangers were rotten and note the roll cage is scaffolding poles held together with gaffer tape. Looked great at the exhibition but definitely a wolf in sheeps clothing.......But the marina coupe is a nice shape _________________ The Clan Chieftain |

I always thought that Volvo didn't quite work as a coupe, but if one was offered, I wouldn't say no! |

I think that Volvo should be in the other topic - ugly cars....
One of the most ugly coupes ever IMO.
Later they did it again with the 780 which was a little bit better looking.
I agree that most cars look good in 2 door form. Not so sure about the Stag (hardtop) - that looks a bit too long. The 2000/2500 saloon (Mk2) has better proportions.
Same for some mid sixties American 2 door coupes if they could be had in 4 door version too. Too long proportions. Chrysler 1965 for example. _________________ a car stops being fun when it becomes an investment |
