...So the manual says Shell Donax T6 / Castrol TQ / EssoAutomaticTransmission 55 / Energol ATF type A ...
What's the modern equivalent of that? Will Dexron 11/111 be ok?
It's for a BG box in an Armstron Sideley Star Sapphire? _________________ '60 Armstrong Siddeley Star Sapphire

There was a similar discussion on here back in April 2009, but I reckon that that was pretty inconclusive. Personally I would put a call in to Millers or similar who have a significant interest in classic oils and ask their advice |

Some sound advice from Paul. Many of the postings on OCC reveal manufacturers and specialists as an under used source of specialist information.

In American cars type A has been replaced by Dextron. Dextron II should be O.K. Dextron III is more suited to heavy duty applications, but as the others have said it always best to check with a specialist |

But it wasn't too common when I was looking for some about 8-10 years ago, so I suspect you may struggle to find it now. |

Useless information for you. The original Type A atf was phased out because one of it's main ingredients was whale oil. |

When I was at school, late 50's, we did projects about whaling and whale factory ships. |

Dextron III is backwardly compatible with the two previous versions. However, many older gearboxes tended to use mineral type F/G AQF, examples being the Ford C3 and Borg Warner 35 as fitted to UK Fords etc.
Therefore I would want to be certain as using Dextron in a type F/G box would be disastrous. _________________ Evans Waterless Coolants

It's a Borg Warner DG... The consensus seems to be dextron ll is correct oil. _________________ '60 Armstrong Siddeley Star Sapphire
