There is a Commer Walk Thru for sale on Ebay:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/commer-van/332392451985?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649
What I cannot understand is that there seems no or little interest in this kind of van, whereas other ordinary vans are worth lots and lots of money. Citroën HY vans used as food trucks, VW vans fetching stupid money.
I can see the attraction of a nice HY truck, the (non)styling of it and basic construction.
But a Commer Walk Thru such as the one in the ad also has its virtues, it is nicely styled with the sliding doors, little nose, split windscreen, big wings / wheel arches. Surely they must be more practical to use as a food truck (interior height one thing) than a VW?
Or is it the same story as usual - unknown, unwanted?

That is a nice van but I think what puts a lot of people off something like that in the UK is the class seven MOT, its really not as bad as some think if you keep up with the maintenance. I would like it but enough things now. |

They are nice vans and not very common these days. How many do you see at shows these days? _________________ Various Rootes Vehicles. |

There is a point at which there is a divide between "van" and "commercial". A van is assumed to be up to the size of a long wheel base Transit or Sprinter and people will drive it (some of them cautiously) on their car licence. The Commer just nudges over into the "commercial" category. A bit bigger, a bit less sophisticated, a bit less performance - a bit less of everything really.
Therefore, the market is much smaller for such a vehicle and explains the gap between a "classic van" pricewise and what is perceived to be a small truck. I've been looking for a J4 project for years now as part of a club project and the (very) few survivors go for idiotic amoiunts of money for what was, at best, a poor vehicle even at the time.

Agreed, small vans now fetch a fortune. They are small enough to fit in a garage whereas vans this size would require larger storage making it more difficult for many would be restorers. _________________ Various Rootes Vehicles. |

Going back to the photo at the start of this post, there's something that's been nagging me about it. I'm surprised that the fleabay listing doesn't mention it either. This van must, at some point, have featured in Heartbeat (still miss that on TV) as there's no real town called Ashfordly. Did anyone else spot this? |

It seems it very probably was in Heartbeat transporting condemned meat (Season18, Episode 22).
http://heartbeat.wikia.com/wiki/The_Open_Door
"An unidentified man is found badly injured by the roadside near Aidensfield and PC Mason thinks he was assaulted. A complaint about a van blocking the way in Back Lane leads not only to the identity of the unknown man, but also to a load of condemned meat which has now disappeared." It later states the van was owned by Hardcastle Butchers

Looking at the first post I can't believe the size of the garden gnomes in the background. |

Asda have been selling giant plastic gnomes like that for a while now. Ghastly things but they're obviously selling and have popped up in several front yards locally. |
