Sorted the wiring on the LH inner wing for the Jaguar 420. Old brittle wires were renewed (following the original color codes of course) for the alternator, the brake fluid floats and the electric windscreen washer. New connectors crimped on and finished off with heat shrink.
Removed, de-rusted and painted the brackets for the windscreen washer bottle and the brake fluid containers. _________________ a car stops being fun when it becomes an investment |

Not car related but old tech anyway. Got a tone convertor for the old bakelite telephone which I inherited from my late father. He had it installed in 1964, we were the first in our street to have a telephone for years after which was a bit of a nuisance as we kids frequently had to go to the neighbors because there was a call for them.
The phone itself is a locally produced item (HEEMAF 1955) which was the standard for the dutch PTT (Post, Telegram, Telephone) for almost a decade. There was a table model or the much rarer wall model which we had.
Installed the convertor and now the phone is functional again instead of a static item. Good to sit again on the stairs making calls!

Due to illness I haven't been down the yard over Christmas but managed an hour after lunch today. On the Commer lorry, I have been re-fitting the door trims, handles and making sure the window runners operate correctly. _________________ Various Rootes Vehicles. |

It's good to see though, we all need a little jog or encouragement sometimes Richard, me included.
Back to the thread tittle purpose.
The last couple of days work.
New hoses fitted, cleaned Carburettor, fan belt etc. and got the Model Y running, if only on two cylinders, then checked out compressions, started at bulkhead end so No.4 100psi, No.3 110psi, No.2 Zero and No.1 zero, put a splash of oil down 1 and 2 and still nowt. This goes along will what the PO told me that the last time he ran her up, a couple of years ago, it had a stuck valve. Now I think it stopped at a different point and another one is also stuck, well I hope so anyway.
Tomorrow the head comes off, unless someone out there knows a trick that they would share. I have had a screwdriver down the plug holes making sure the two accessible ones are ok which I think are the inlets and not the usual ones to stick, in my experience it's usually the exhausts that give the trouble.
An update soon to be added with photos to the ole gals own thread. _________________ Paul

Got some more work done on the Commer lorry this morning, managed to get the passenger door finished. I fitted up door mirror and arm and then very carefully re-fitted the repaired/repainted inner window surround. Just some foam excluder to be bought and fitted round the edge to stop draughts and then its properly finished. _________________ Various Rootes Vehicles. |

My 47 Minx hasn't been started since last April so yesterday with the help of my 6 year old son we checked her over for oil/fuel levels etc, checked the plugs and points and then after about 5 turns on the starter on half choke she fired up lovely.
She has a problem with the throttle sticking and that was apparent again, when I pushed the choke back in she stayed revving at a very high rate. Something for us to look at in the next few months. _________________ Various Rootes Vehicles. |

Always good to get an old sleeper running again. But surely that sticking throttle would not need months to look at? _________________ a car stops being fun when it becomes an investment |

No it wont take months but I have to fit it in with other projects, I'll give myself a couple of months cause I'd like to get her back on the road in the spring. _________________ Various Rootes Vehicles. |

Of course - plus there is always the chance that something simple can expand to a much larger job.
I am changing just a brake pipe on the Jaguar, from front inner LH wing to the flex hose at the rear suspension. Simple to remove and not even hard to put back a new one. Except that I now had a good look at the chassis where it is attached to, and I decided I would want to fresh up that area before putting the pipe back. Which means scraping away underseal, de-rust some superficial rust, clean, paint, underseal and finally mount the brake pipe. Which in time means instead of a 2 hour job it has morphed into a 8 hour or more job, spread out over a couple of days.
I do not mind having to do this as I know it is best for the preservation of the car, and no immediate hurry is needed.
No hurry, no worry. _________________ a car stops being fun when it becomes an investment |

That's right, set yourself for a job and when you get into it you find something else! _________________ Various Rootes Vehicles. |

Did you try some quick squirting of WD40 in relevant areas before shutting the bonnet? |

No I didn't, but I did note that if I pull the pedal up by hand the revs drop. So, something in the system is not springing/returning the pedal correctly. _________________ Various Rootes Vehicles. |

Is it cable ? Or rod?
How is the pedal hinged?
If cable, can that have some oil squirted down the cable inner?
How strong/weak is the throttle return spring[s]? |
