Does anyone else remember a black & white film about the test flying of a Bristol Freighter?
Included lots of nostalgic looks at the typically 1950s shopping centre near Filton.
AIRC there was some sort of rocket assisted take off involved and the load shifted during the flight. |

Ahh the memories, when I was a little boy Freighters were flying out of Lydd and every evening one would fly right over our place I think on its way to Southend. We are about 12 miles from Lydd and I think if one flew over now I would be able to tell what it was even if I could not see it. Years later I met someone who was to become my best man at our wedding and he loaded Ford Anglias, various other cars for tourists and even sheep to hop over the channel to Le Touqeut. A very adaptable aircraft the Freighter. Happy days. |

Hi
Before Lydd, Silver City used Lympne and the Charles Oxley book about Bristols recounts:-
Quote: | In 1950 he (Tony Crook) drove a standard model 401 from Caterham in Surrey to the MontIhery circuit, with an airlift from Lympne to Le Touquet, and including a brief visit to the Paris Motor Show. Then, under official observation, he covered 104.78 miles in one hour from a standing start, with a best flying lap at 107mph. He then drove back to Caterham, with an airlift across the Channel, the entire 'visit' having taken just under the twelve hours that it had been estimated would be sufficient. The only alterations made to the car were a slightly higher rear axle ratio, and racing tyres. |

I spent many hours as a youngster back in the fifties at Southend Airport watching the Bristol Freighters of Channel Air Bridge taking off and landing. I believe this was an early advenure of Freddy Laker.
Southend airport was of course, the old Rochford RAF fighter base in the second world war. We used to creep through the damaged fence around the back of the airport to spend our days sitting on top of an abandoned pillbox and check aircraft registrations as they came and went. Happy days!

Its weird being the same age as old people.

Keith D's post reminded me. Many years ago I read a Biog book about Freddie Laker and his company 'Aviation Traders' which operated from Southend.
One story went that, realising the limitations of the Bristol Freighter, he designed a remodelling of the DC-4 to create the 'Carvair' to supercede the Bristol as a classy car carrier. It was said that he recognised the glut of DC-4 and 6 airframes following the Berlin airlift and the arrival of jet airliners in the U.S. so the profit margin on his conversion was especially good.
I do recall seeing a Carvair overhead Cardiff on a regular weekly service west to east but I never had the chance to see one on the ground. |

Just once, flying out of Gatwick in the early 70's, I saw one of Freddie Laker's 747's.
I'm sorry, but there's something terribly wrong to paint a thing the size of a 747 in PINK! _________________ Mike - MVPeters at comcast.net

Hi
There's something wrong with painting a Carvair like this, as well.

Try googling pink airliners and look at the images if you can stand it. _________________ Bristols should always come in pairs.
