|
|
Hi all,
On Friday, a friend and I headed down to the NEC for this year's classic and restoration show. As in 2017, there was a broad mix of vehicles on display, ranging from the barn/shed/field find variety, through part-restored cars (many being worked on over the weekend) to shiny, as-new, examples of many different cars.
I've 195 photographs to add in here, beginning with batch number 1 (photos 1-100 incl.), the rest will follow later.

I do very much like that Model CX Ford, I remember seeing a similar tourer at a show near us many years back.
It also looks to be a very good show of European made UK registered vehicles, the Saab's in particular look nice in original condition. _________________ Various Rootes Vehicles. |

Plenty of material to keep the quiz page going on there!
Seriously, I wonder if I was at the same show as there's a lot there I must have missed? I talked to the guys on the Rover P6 stand and the pale blue 2000 above, in very rusty order at the front end (strangely, rest of it looked remarkably good) a 1964 model, had apparently been sitting outside uncovered in all weathers for some 20 years. I'm quite astonished that so much of it was left after that and despite the corrosion looking bad, it hadn't actually perforated through the exposed parts. Tougher than they look!

PRACTICAL CLASSICS CLASSIC CAR AND RESTORATION SHOW, WITH DISCOVERY, BREAKS ALL RECORDS.
This year’s Practical Classics Classic Car and Restoration Show, with Discovery, broke all records – record crowds, record number of cars and clubs, record fundraising and more restoration and rust than ever before!
A record 28,151 motoring enthusiasts, an increase of over 3,000 attendees, headed to Birmingham’s NEC over the three-day show to see over 1,000 cars in various conditions, from a rusty heap to a concours stunner.
They were treated to amazing vehicle displays, live working on projects and informative demonstrations from 159 classic motoring clubs, the most to ever appear at the show, giving visitors all the hints and tips to restore and maintain their own vehicles.
The Sporting Bears Motor Club also achieved a new show record, increasing their fundraising efforts through the popular ‘Dream Rides’ from £11,000 to a whopping £15,800. The Dream Rides garage featured rare cars including the MG SVR and a stunning traction engine that never stopped giving rides around the outside of the halls all weekend.
Show Director Lee Masters said: “Over the past five years, the growth of this event has been phenomenal, not just in terms of the numbers but in the way the car clubs are pushing the boundaries with live working and demonstrations. They spur each other on and give fresh ideas on how to showcase the wealth of knowledge within the club as well enticing new members. There is no other show in the classic motoring community like it anywhere in the world!”
Over on the show’s Practical Classics Live Stage, with Discovery, the team restored what is believed to be the oldest Citreon 2CV in existence, with the vehicle taken from a shell on day one to being driven off the stage with Wheeler Dealers Mike Brewer behind the wheel at the end of Sunday.
The Carole Nash Barn Find display saw 20 discoveries, in various stages of decay, on show including a Triumph TR6, an Austin A35, a Singer Gazelle and a vintage caravan. Visitors were treated to live music as they viewed the barn finds while artist ArtbyBex recreated the Citroen 2CV on show in a live painting.
At the other end of the scale, the Lancaster Insurance Pride of Ownership final was won by Paul Clappison’s 1972 MGB GT, with Bron Burrell’s ex-World Cup Rally Austin Maxi called ‘Puff’ taking second place while Graham Varley’s 1993 VW Corrado VR6 was third.
TV motoring celebrities attending include Wheeler Dealers’ Mike Brewer and Ant Anstead, Car SOS’ Fuzz Townshend and Tim Shaw, Salvage Hunters: Classic Cars’ Paul Cowland, Fifth Gear’s Jonny Smith, and Jimmy De Ville and the team from Goblin Works Garage.
Classic Car Auctions saw 81 per cent of the 165 cars on offer finding new homes over the two-day sale with total sales reaching £2.1million.
The 2019 Practical Classics Classic Car and Restoration Show, with Discovery will take place from Fri 22 to Sun 24 March 2019. _________________ Rick - Admin

I think my photos have upset a Lotus owner ... received via Twitter just now:
"<sigh> Another one who walked right past the Lotus stands without even looking. #nobodylovesus"
then
"I've seen so many photos of the cars around us that it's starting to feel like a conspiracy!"
Sigh. As it happens I did look, but by mid-afternoon the odd-shaped battery in my camera had packed up and I didn't have a spare. The head-on view of a Europa in the Sporting Bears area clearly wasn't enough Lotus content for this aggrieved visitor.

Hi
Did you by any chance see a late 30s-40s american car in a sort of greeny yellow with a racing number on the door.
I overtook one on the M1 on Friday morning which was travelling in an NEC direction.
I don't know what it was but it had a fast back type of body style and when first seen I thought it might be a Bristol 401/3 but it was smaller than that when I got nearer, more the size of a Javelin but it had an American look about it with an upright grill.
It was only you reminding me of the show at the weekend that got me wondering if it was headed there, I had been thinking a retro race track meeting. _________________ Bristols should always come in pairs.

It doesn't ring a bell, but I probably missed a few stands and a large number of cars!
