Rick
I know someone who had to do a high-speed heart transplant run from Rochdale to Blackpool in one of those Fords. Outriders and pre-positioned constables at major junctions.
He took the bonnet off to avoid the front end lifting and reckoned he did it in well under the hour pre-motorway. _________________ Bristols should always come in pairs.

I joined Cornwall Constabulary in the 1960s. We had Minor 1000s as panda cars, and for traffic we had Westminsters. I recall two Zephyr/Zodiacs with experimental Ferguson 4 wheel drive being sent down for evaluaion, but I don't recall them in service and I don't think they caught on.
Excitement of excitements, we had a Lotus Cortina Mk I join the traffic fleet.
Station tillies could be Bedford CA with wooden slatted seats, or Anglia 1200 estates.
Occasionally we would rendezvous with Devon Constabulary traffic cars at the Gateway to Heaven, as the bridge over the Tamar near Launceston was called. They would turn up in Austin Healey 3000s sometimes, which brought the quip "good job you never arrest anyone, you haven't anywhere to put them!" |

It's actually a 1936. it could have been registered 1938, because some obsolete stock came into the U.K. from Canada. I have seen at least 3 1935 V8's that were registered as '37's |

You are correct
The date of the photo was circa 1938 not the car sorry!
Belfast registration number EZ was issued as follows
EZ 1 to EZ 9999 (Oct 1935 – Oct 1938);
so EZ 3798 probably is 1936? |

Yes, EZ 3798 dates from 1936; the first EZ issue of 1936 was EZ 1146 and the first of 1937 was EZ 5220. _________________ in the garage: 1938 Talbot Ten Airline

I remember one of the numerous Minis that cluttered the drive of our house back in the 70’s had been a Police Patrol car. The roof lining had a zip across it where the blue light had been connected. Apart from that it was stock. |

A Ford Anglia 105e Estate from the late 60's used by the RUC (Royal Ulster Constabulary)
This model was used by that police force up to 1971

In The Hague,Holland, where i was born, the police used Willys Jeeps untill the late 50's:
https://www.google.co.nz/search?q=willys+politie+jeep+den+haag&tbm=isch&source=iu&ictx=1&fir=cT_NwwUdL5OXcM%253A%252ClJTPNda3h-YL8M%252C_&usg=___iSBQQkApudpw8eaLydrFHRK7bw%3D&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjAj7X0k8_bAhWIT7wKHTwqDKcQ9QEIOTAB#imgrc=xzLXKZjvYITpcM:
These were replaced by VW's with the roof cut off,(nicknamed "halfies",and a canvas roof over the drivers area, later replaced with a steel roof, similar to the Amsterdam vehicles:

In the 60's standard VW beetles were used, the half cab presumably deemed to expensive to manufacture.Mercedes Benz also got a look in,but only the 4-cylinder 190.Later still VW Golf was widely used, but by then I'd left for NZ,where Australian Holdens were (and still are)in use.
Incidentally, the Porsche 356 shown earlier was only used by the dutch State police, which patrolled the motorways. They were very experienced men,who would admonish rather than dole out tickets.
I believe it's a very different story today. |

I can state quite categorically....that a Honda 125cc Benly Special, can outrun a Met Police BMC 1100 panda car!
Not so sure about a Met Police Sunbeam Tiger..[which I spotted from the cab of my London Transport RT decker, when I was a proper driver]?
Weren't coppers so very much larger in those days? |
