Jaguar XK 70th Anniversary to be held at Shelsley Walsh Hill Climb.

Key Points
•Jaguar XK 70th anniversary in 2018
•Mega international celebration taking place at Shelsley Walsh Hill Climb
•Organised by the UK-based International Jaguar XK Club
•June 9/10 2018
•Legendary privateer Le Mans racers Peter Sutcliffe, Peter Lumsden & Peter Sargent confirmed

XK70 in 2018!

The sensational star of the 1948 Earls Court Motor Show, the iconic Jaguar XK 120 celebrates 70 glorious years in 2018.

“It is our intention to celebrate this landmark in suitable style,” says motoring author, publisher and XK Club founder, Philip Porter.

As the XK engine was massively successful in motor racing, taking the charismatic C-types and D-types to five Le Mans wins in the '50s, motor sport will be a strong theme at XK70.

The latest drivers to confirm their attendance are Peter Sutcliffe, who very successfully raced a D-type and Lightweight E-type in period, and the famous Le Mans duo of Lumsden and Sargent. All three Peters were the last of an era when privateers could still go motor racing at the highest levels.

Coming over from Finland will be Sami Klat, the legendary research engineer who developed Peter Lumsden and Peter Sargent's amazing Low Drag Lightweight E which ran at Le Mans in 1964. Appropriately, the car will also be at Shelsley, as will the owner who is travelling over especially from New York.

“We had 600 XKs at our XK60 event in 2008. Our aim is to exceed that and reach 700 for XK70,” states Porter. All XK 120s, 140s and 150s are eligible, together with their derivatives the C-types and D-types, plus XK-engined cars and all Jaguar sports cars.

“I know how successful XK60 was,” says Peter Sargent, “and XK70 looks to be even better!”

XK70 Jaguar Festival at Shelsley Walsh 9-10 June 2018.

Key Event Points
•XK70 Festival at Shelsley Walsh on 9-10 June 2018
•Group C cars in action
•Former Wheeler Dealers presenter Edd China filming on site
•Open to all XK-engined Jaguars

Three of Jaguar’s legendary Group C cars, including the 1987 Championship-winning XJR-8, will be demonstrated during the XK70 Festival on 9-10 June 2018. The event, which celebrates 70 years since the introduction of the ground-breaking XK120, will take place at Shelsley Walsh in Worcestershire – and the trio of sports-prototypes will join a packed programme of entertainment.

Organisers are aiming to attract a record-breaking 700 XKs from around the world to the historic venue, including those rare examples that were re-bodied in period by some of the world’s finest coachbuilders, such as Ghia and Bertone. Also welcome are all other XK-engined Jaguars, including the Mk1 and Mk2, E-type and XJ6, plus more recent models such as the XK8 and F-type.

Personalties attending include former Wheeler Dealers presenter Edd China, who will be filming at the event, and Sir John Egan, former Jaguar Chairman and author of the best-selling book 'Saving Jaguar'.

Entries are now open for the competitive hillclimb, which will take place on the Saturday, while Sunday will be packed with memorable parades and demonstration runs – including the chance for enthusiasts to drive their own car up the hill. Le Mans winner Richard Attwood will be there, as will former Jaguar racers Peter Sutcliffe and Peter Sargent, plus the evergreen Norman Dewis.

Overhead, the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight will stage a fly-past, while a vintage fairground, shopping village and live music are sure to keep all members of the family entertained.

Discounted advance tickets start at £20, with under-16s getting in free when accompanied by an adult. VIP packages are also available.

XK70 Jaguar Festival confirms more cars and personalities

•Former Jaguar Chairman and Chief Stylist to be guests of honour
•Le Mans XJ220C joins three Group C racers
•More historic Jags to be driven at speed up the hill
•TV presenter Edd China at event with 'Ask Edd LIVE'
•Progress made towards gathering a record-breaking 700 XK cars

The number of attractions confirmed for this summer’s XK70 Jaguar Festival at Shelsley Walsh Hillclimb is growing fast. The family-friendly event in Worcestershire on 9-10 June will celebrate the 70th anniversary of the ground-breaking XK120 and all subsequent XK cars and engines, and in the last month more well-known Jaguar personalities and cars have committed to taking part.

Two guests of honour newly confirmed for the Festival are Sir John Egan, the chairman of Jaguar from 1980 to 1990 who saved the company from bankruptcy, and Keith Helfet, the former Chief Stylist at Jaguar who designed the XJ220 supercar, the XK180 concept car which commemorated the XK’s 50th anniversary, and the 1990s F-type concept. Another well-known personality at the Festival will be Edd China, former presenter of Discovery Channel’s hit TV programme ‘Wheeler Dealers’, filming and taking questions in a session of 'Ask Edd LIVE'.

Cars newly confirmed for the two-day event include the TWR XJ220C driven by David Coulthard, David Brabham and John Nielsen at Le Mans in 1993; XJR-5 road and race cars built by TWR, with XJR race cars to be driven at speed up the Shelsley Walsh course by Goodwood Hillclimb winner Justin Law; the JD Classics collection of historic XKs, some to be driven up the hill by Chris Ward; the full range of Special Edition Eagle E-types; and Eagle’s historic collection of a dozen important E-types.

Other cars previously confirmed for the Festival include three of Jaguar’s legendary Group C racing cars, including the 1987 World Sportscar Championship-winning XJR-8; XK120s, 140s, and 150s; and a whole raft of XK-engined cars including C-types, D-types, E-types, and XJ6s. Cars are being brought to the Festival by owners who live in the UK, mainland Europe, Scandinavia, and the USA. The event’s organisers, the XK Club, are aiming to set a world record by gathering 700 classic XKs in the same place at the same time.

Other notable personalities attending the XK70 Jaguar Festival include former amateur racing driver Peter Sargent and, from Finland, mechanical engineer Dr. Samir Klat, who between them developed and modified the famous low-drag Lightweight E-type, 49 FXN together with the late-Peter Lumsden; Peter Sutcliffe who raced a D-type and Lightweight E, and drove GTOs and GT40s at Le Mans, and Richard Attwood, who raced for several British teams in Formula One before winning Le Mans in a Porsche 917 in 1970.

The Festival promises a packed programme of entertainment for all the family, with a competitive hillclimb on Saturday and high-speed demonstration runs up the hill on Sunday; a vintage fairground; a shopping village; live music; and a Battle of Britain Memorial Flight fly-past - all in the beautiful hillside setting of the world’s oldest surviving motorsport venue.

All the major Jaguar specialists will be present, including spectacular displays from J.D Classics, Eagle Racing, Lynx and Hexagon Classics. The remaining trade space is available on a first come first serve basis.

I'll be there Rick with the XKSS. For those who know Jaguar history I am enthralled to be invited to stay with the Heynes family (not to be confused with the Haynes museum people) and peruse his works journals. If you like I'll post a series of photos when I get back but June is complicated with the Le Mans test day one Sunday, XK70 the next and then the 24 Hours the following weekend. Then a short break until the Classic. Phew!

I was at both XK50 and 60, but I doubt I'll make XK80!

Oil change done, plugs checked, tyres correctly inflated, but I have a quandary. I am staying with the Heynes family (he who designed the XK engine) and so do I take the spare out, put a case of wine in, and risk it? Decisions decisions. Whatever, I am truly looking forward to this coming weekend, sharing Shelsley Walsh with a quick trip to Prescott on Sunday for another Jaguar day. Will any of you be going to Shelsley?
