One of the aircraft displaying at the 2017 Torbay Air Show, Paignton was a Catalina - and what an impressive sight it made too.
This particular Catalina was originally supplied to the Royal Canadian Air Force in October 1943. After military service it was used for many years as an air borne fire fighter based in Marseille in the mid 60’s. In the70’s and 80’s it fulfilled a similar role in Canada. By the late 90’s the plane was languishing in storage until it was purchased in 2004 and restored back to its original RCAF colour scheme by its current operators, Plane Sailing Air Displays based at Duxford.
To see some pics of the Catalina, as well as the other planes on display over the weekend, please visit my Flickr album:

It is such a lovely old aircraft, we have seen it flying a few times and it has so much character. _________________ Various Rootes Vehicles. |

A close friend of mine flew Catalina's in the Middle East at the latter end of WW2. At the start of WW2 he joined the LDV (Home Guard) then joined the RAF and went to the USA as part of the Towers Flight Training Scheme based at Pensacola. There he got his RAF wings and became a Flight Sergeant. He is 94 years old but still has a good memory for those years, just recently I had his Flight Log for a while; makes interesting reading!
I also have a photo of him in front of the Catalina at Duxford; the same one shown in the photo.
Finally there was a British Pensacola Veterans Association; I have a copy of the 1979 Nominal Roll but I do not think the Association is still going.

Somewhere I've an old print drawing of a Catalina, which appears to have signatures of various crew members all around the outside of it. It came from a collector's centre some years ago for a modest amount, I did begin to research some of the names, I must pick that up again sometime.

Rick,
Is it possible for you to find the print and email me a copy?
I could then check the signatures (if readable!) against the Nominal Roll I have or show it to my Catalina Pilot friend and ask him if he recognises anyone.

Hi
The Plain Sailing Catalina got stuck, with an engine failure, on Loch Ness.
This BBC Alba programme follows the rescue and return to flight, the film is dated MMXX so I suppose it must have happened last year, though I can't remember any news mention of it.
Being an ALBA programme it is voiced generally in Gaelic, with English subtitles.

I read that they were unable to start the engine due to starter equipment failure. |

That happened to me at LHR some years ago.
The BA pilot announced that a starter had exploded. (I wish pilots of aircraft would not use the word 'exploded').
We taxied to the other side of the airport, changed the starter & took off about 45 mins late.
Not too bad. _________________ Mike - MVPeters at comcast.net
