I found some old copies of practical Motorist,Autocar and Motor all 1950 to 55 and have just spent an interesting half hour flitting through them.
Does anyone remember FJ Camm the editor? I remember he was the author of many of the early mechanical and mototring books. The adverts are curious and varied, the DROK upper cylinder lubricator at 75 shillings ssems a bargain and a new vacuum wiper motor by Trico was a similar steal at 39/6d with 7/6d allowed on the old unit.
National Benzole was guaranteed to give your car more power and if that wore the engine of your Austin 7 out Withams could supply a rebored block and pistons for £3.9.6d.If you are the type who'd wipe his oily hands on his tie when fitting one,not to worry you could buy three plain plastic mechanics ties guaranteed to ward off oil for 7/6d from Boultings.
I suppose it's too late to ask Blackbird Hill garage to send me a set of Bonner whitworth spanners for 13/6d and the Hepon ring spanners look good value at 25 bob post at 1/6d seems very reasonable too,but I doubt the phone number COL indale 6134 works these days.
Oh happy days. |

I couldn't afford many of these things on my pocket money in 1950.

Yes, F J Camm was into all sorts of engineering and published many books and of course all the "Practical" series of magazines. His older brother, Sydney was the designer of the Hurricane.

Thanks for the links.I remember Camm best for the Newynes Engineers pocket book.I'm sure I've still got a copy somewhere.
In the Practical Motorist and motor cyclist of 1955 there is an editorial by him urging motorists to speak out against proposed road tolls.Over fifty years later and the goverment is still looking at ways to fleece the motorist. |

That really brings back memories. I recall, around 1949, receiving my pocket money and dashing to a little shop opposite Streatham Station to buy the last component needed for my crystal set. The tuning condenser.
I still remember the excitement of hearing the first sounds coming through the headset. Surely the electronc gadgetry kids have these days could never equal that for excitement.
