|
|
Forgive me if this is a stupid question, but is it possible to work out what the dwell angle should be from the points gap (even if it is in a "range" for a 4 cylinder car. I've guessed that the correct points gap should be 12 thou (from similar aged cars) but would like to check the actual dwell to elimainate dizzy wear.
Thanks

50-60 for 4's and 34-39ยบ for 6's but all dizzies have their own optimum setting. Pre-war have a lower gap generally - increased dwell gives smaller gap _________________ Rover P2

My Morris 8 is 10 to 12 thou,
You can get away with a small gap with low revving engine's, smaller gap also give the coil the longest "charge" time, which if its 6v it needs!

Quite so and lathough my prewar Rover is a 6 cylinder with 12v electrics it will not run with well at all with a gap larger than 14 thou yet 1964 P5 3 Litre needs a 16 thou gap with its "high performance" HA12 coil. Its needs wide plug gaps too 29 thou but the prewar are 20thou _________________ Rover P2

If it is a Lucas distributor it will be 60 degrees. _________________ Quote from my late Dad:- You only need a woman and a car and you have all the problems you

thanks, so much. Sounds like setting to a dwell of 60 deg is worth a go as I have a modern 12v coil fitted, which should set the points 10-12 thou (Ihope) _________________ North Essex,UK - Morris 8 tourer 1936 - Jaguar x350 |

Sorry Jim, serves me right for hijacking a thread.
Did you mean 60 degrees for my Triumph engine? And yes, I do have a Lucas distributor.
Thanks
Graham. |

I would not presume to argue with the experts Phil. My Trade Autodata Manual gives 57 to 63 degrees for all 25D4 Lucas distributors I can find whatever they were fitted to including the Triumph in question. Hence 60 degrees nominal.
I have always set them as close to 60 as possible with excellent results Graham. _________________ Quote from my late Dad:- You only need a woman and a car and you have all the problems you

Now I am confused, which of this applies to my question and which to 1960's triumphs!
Is 60 deg correct for 1930's lucas or 1960's?????? _________________ North Essex,UK - Morris 8 tourer 1936 - Jaguar x350 |

Many thanks to you all for that, I shall try this setting this week hopefully.
And sorry Tim for jumping your thread and confusing matters.
