Slight blond moment, but I have a gear with a knock in key, that holds the gear on, what is the proper name for this key?

Woodruff key if you mean the 1/2 moon type which is just a bit off the top of a circular steel disk _________________ Rover P2

Hi
Just came to me the word was tapered this led onto gib!
So how do you remove a very tight gib key, that has no head, for a gib puller?

Hi
I have seen these used on engines, but you have to have a head for it to slot behind, mine doesn't seem to have any head left, or it has been hit that far in it has gone.
Either way a gib key puller won't work.
I am tempted to get a big puller and just give it a pull, but I think it will break the sproket as it will just get tighter!
I need this sproket off to source/replace the bearing that has completeley collapsed, snapping the chain in the process, and the chain is really quite large, must have gone with a wollap! hehe

Any chance of putting a bit of weld on it to give the puller something to hang on. |

I might have to do that, a few blobs on the top corner, it is very short indeed, but might be enough.

If the gear is not against a shoulder you can try driving the gear forward a little to release the key.

Hi
Well I have done it.
I drove the sprocket forward as far as I could with a copper hammer, it went a little, 3 or 4 mm, but it didn't release the key. So I got the big pullers out, and pulled the sprocket off, with the key still in there, it came out ok in the end.
