Wonderful! And now I know that if oil leaks out of the starter motor it could be a short circuit! You live and learn!

Nice film. Back in early 60s when I was a kid my parents used to take my sister and me on holiday to a farm on Mull. Almost all the roads were single track with grass growing up along the middle. There wasn't any scrap yard on the island and it wasn't worth paying for old vehicles to be shipped to the mainland so there were some fascinating old chassis sticking out of bogs etc.
Real vintage stuff. At the farm itself I remember a nice complete Morris 14 Series II that was good to play in once we'd shoved the hens out.
A few years later we stayed at the Manse at Ardvasar on Skye where the minister performed a number of local functions: policeman, postman, poacher and gamekeeper and few more besides. He had a small boat with an early Evinrude outboard with a big flywheel on the top. He apparently found and rescued the outboard from under the waves in the bay. He also explained how whilst fishing one day the plug got oiled up and he didn't have a spanner so had to resort to using his teeth!

what a wonderful hour of satisfaction to see so many people enjoying the style of yesteryear! i felt so at ease, even thought of putting on the greasy overalls one more time ---those bedford buses brought back so many memories,i could just feel myself adjusting the tappets and the sheer joy of listening to a six cylinder fire up...thanks for the time taken--i`ll probably dream of the trying times of a mechanic with a smile from ear to ear!!!
cheers--Ray the Rocker..... |

Thanks to Penman for his input and to Peter Scott too for his contribution.
I was at school at Fort Augustus from 1949 until 1954 and it was just such a bus, in that very livery, which carried us from Inverness at the start of each term and back at the end.It always seemed to us that there was little sense of urgency or concern with trivia like timetables. The drivers seemed to be able to have a chat or drop of packages at farm cottages, garages etc.and still arrive at one's destination more or less when expected!
The world seemed a more gentle, balanced place without all the frenetic behaviour which seems to have become so prevalent nowadays.
Perhaps that is just how it appears to a geriatric like me. |

I spent a long weekend up on the islands, which is a tale in itself, but with regard to this thread I "discovered" dozens of scrap cars in an old disused quarry ranging from the 1940's.
Apparently it was at that time (c1989) too expensive to transport scrap vehicles to the mainland so owners had to find a place to dump them and the quarry fitted the bill. For all I know they might still be up there waiting to be saved.
I even found a Ford Popular half buried in the sand on one of the islands wonderful stretches of shoreline. Not the sort of thing you would expect to come across in such an idylic setting.

Not viewable outside of U.K
I can remember going to Scotland and the islands with my parents in the 1950's and 60's. Didn't have the interest then, but I do remember seeing so many old cars either abandoned in fields or pushed over cliffs. |
