Im shortly to be restoring a Peugeot 304 Cabriolet S with a friend of mine. It was "put to bed" 25 years ago and hasn't been moved since.
Was left with the handbrake off (like thats made a difference) and mechanically everything was working when it was left 25 years ago in the garage.
Getting the brakes unseized will be the first job and once thats done, whats the likely hood of the engine being okay with some TLC? What will the first steps be?
My thoughts were to drain all existing fuel, oil and water and top everything back up again then leaving to sit for 3 or 4 days for everything to settle.
I've also heard about putting oil in the cylinder heads? What oil would be best?
After that I was going to try and bump start it and get it turning over...
Any tips or useful information would be great - Im guessing it's a huge long shot that the engine will start...? |

If it was me I would squirt a shot of engine oil down each plug hole, put on a decent battery, turn it over a few times with the plugs out, then put the plugs back and see what happens. Old fuel doesn't have the same problems as modern fuel, so it might be okay. If it doesn't do owt after a few turns check for spark and if that seems okay try a splash of fresh fuel down the carb and try again. |

Thanks for the reply... Fairly new to all this as you may have gathered...
By plug hole are you referring to the piston!?! Or are you suggesting something completely different

Referring to putting a drop of oil down each hole that the spark plugs (4) fit into. Let the oil percolate around for a while then spin the engine on the starter with the plugs out, to get the oil circulating a little and hopefully a little oil pressure before going for a Start.

Ah ok, Will remove spark plugs then and add a bit of oil as suggested.
Will try to get it turning over - may have to try a jump start.
Any other tips for the first attempts? |

Whats the best way of manually getting it to spin? Will put a decent battery in to make sure that aint the problem! |

Hi Phil,
I don't konw your engine, but there's usually a pulley at the bottom of the front of the engine. This is bolted directly to the crank shaft which runs all the way through the engine to your clutch, and then to the gearbox & then to the drive shaft.
You can put a spanner on the bolt that holds this pulley on and turn it clockwise. Don't swing out of it too hard if the engine is tight, you'll be in more trouble if you break the bolt off!
Takingthe spark plugs out will make it easier to turn. Also, be careful that a load of debris doesn't fall down the plug holes once you take the plugs out.
Let us know how it goes. Any pics?

Please dont try and start the engine by this method, if the engine fired up it could do untold damage to car and fingers.

Thanks for explicitly stating that Rod! He's right, the spanner on the crank is only a suggestion for how to check that the engine turns freely, not a suggestion on how to start it up! |

Hello, I am interested in your restoration as it is a Peugeot!! I have found a fantastic supplier of spares in Germany (a couple of them speak English too) If you contact them they will send you a great Peugeot spares catalogue IN ENGLISH !! I bought a brake master cylinder from them for my 1961 Peugeot D4B : great service too.
