|
|
I am always wary of adverts stating that an additive will restore or prolong my engines life.
I have always been of the belief that if an engine is worn it should be stripped and rebuilt.
But recently I have been reading about AMETECH an engine oil additive.
I have amongst other vehicles a very nice Singer Gazelle,it has covered 71,000 miles, but has developed the usual Rootes problem of the rocker box breather smoking.
The usual trick is to vent this outlet with a piece of pipe vented under the car.
The engine runs very well with no adverse noises, and has good oil pressure.
It had stood unused for 5/6 years,I have recently covered about 150 miles in the last couple of weeks.
It obviously appears the rings are worn or bores glazed.
I do not really want to start stripping the engine at this point.
Has anyone had any dealings with this product.?

I tried it on my Rover 3 Litre which has worn rings/bores and it made no difference at all _________________ Rover P2

I've bought and sold all sorts of additives over the years. The only one I've found that made any difference at all and that was slight and only in some cases was Molyslip. The only 'additive' that I use myself now and it probably makes no difference in anything other than an old well worn diesel, is a drop of two stroke oil in with the fuel.Just makes it a bit quieter,no difference to anything else. _________________ Thirty years selling imperial hand tools for old machinery(Now happily retired). |

I think the original poster was asking if anyone had any experience of AMETECH (maybe I'm reading it wrongly?) _________________ 2000 Jaguar XJ8 4.0 LWB

I've known it to work on engines with glazed bores or gummed rings |

Hello,
My question was is this a worthwhile product or would I be throwing good money after bad.?
I do not know of anyone using this product I could ask.
At about £25/£30 to treat a 1600cc engine it is not cheap if its just a sales ploy.
And is Quentin Wilson telling me a tall story when he says It works.

Ive not tried the Ametech stuff but have bought, sold and tried dozens of others as I posted.I have never found one that works in a demostrable and provable manner. I think people are sometimes convinced that because they have spent money and poured something in the engine it has to make a difference,a bit like a plazebo.
Maybe this is what happened with Quentin, although looking at the dates on the adverts it happened quite a few years ago for him. _________________ Thirty years selling imperial hand tools for old machinery(Now happily retired). |

I have had trouble listening to anything Quentin Wilson says for years. He was on TV and recommended buying ex Police cars, as they are driven by trained drivers and meticulously maintained. Who does he think drives the cars, that catch the cars, which are being driven like they are stolen?
I'm retired now, but I wouldn't buy one me or my collegues had used, they were knackered when they went to the block. |

After introducing us to this product Gresham I think you just have to buy it and conduct a scientific test and report the results.
For more general information on oil and its additives I think the write-up by one of our fellow forum members gives us excellent advice. http://www.widman.biz/uploads/Corvair_oil.pdf
