& since nobody ever looks at the subject of photos, but comments on all the neat stuff in the background, where did you get that beach towel? I'd really like one like that. | I would have said yes i have never attempted it but about 15yrs ago a mechanic at my former work's weld repaired an input shaft on a tractor mounted rotavator,he first drilled the centre of the shaft both sides of the break to keep it centralised ,he then ground both side's to a point put the broken half's slowly turning the shaft as he did so together using a roll pin and then started to weld them together, this shaft was built to take about 60-70hp how long it lasted i have no idea but it never came back after being done, the only reason it was repaired was the shaft was obsolete. |

I was in India last year and had a nosey round some of the many "garages" (normally just a workshop big enough to get half the car in, with the other end sticking out on the pavement !) in one of these repair shops they were welding a broken camshaft : this sort of approach is normal, parts are very expensive compared to labour over there, so things just get fixed and if they fail again you fix them again!
I saw the car back on the road later in the day, I wondered long the repair would last? and if the heating of the cam would affect the case hardening. or if they did their own case hardening! ; it wouldn't have surprised me if they did!

Hi, I took a holiday in Morroco a couple of years ago. We went on a tour into the desert, on the way we passed through a Berber village.
The houses all had a built in garage facing onto the street. The garages were being used for making furniture, motorcycle repairs, car repairs, and grocery shops. Furniture, cars and tractors spilled onto the street.
I was fascinated to glimpse a giant lathe in one garage antiquated welding equipment in another and various other equipment.
It seemed as if they would deal with any repair.
I wanted to forget the desert tour and look round, Yvonne vetoed the idea. Not sure how welcome I would have been.
There is a good television programme in there somewhere.
Regards kels. |

I think the MM's next run out with be for a New Year's Day gathering at a local watering hole, the roads are getting a bit too salty/gritty now for too many more expeditions until the weather improves
Wish I still had a sound usable classic for regular use, like the old Cambridge, ho hum

That picture of Riley's Garage brings back a few memories, is it still a going concern? Dick's son (I'm guessing) is a few years older than me and I wouldn't know if Dick is still around?
When I was a lad I bet 1/2 the cars in Nantwich had body filler and celly paint c/o Dick Riley Good honest repairs and a good honest price....
