Yes, I suspect the people who took offence at his remarks didn't actually hear the way he made them or the context. Perhaps they just didn't realise that Clarkson doesn't expect people to take him seriously any more than we should take Basil Faulty seriously. They've probably never watched Top Gear.

If people actually bothered to get the full facts of this befor jumpin on the bandwangon.
The comments were NOT his opinion, Jeremey gave two opinions that people may have on the issue, in his usual humerous way.
People need to lighten up and not take thing so seriously.

I don't always agree with him, but it makes a change to hear someone speak their mind rather than tow a particular party line. If anyone takes him too seriously, or gets offended, they need to toughen up a bit and develop a thicker skin.
