A collection of photos.
Most off slides, and some digital.
Have always had an interest in Aviation from kinder garden and still on going.
When still at school the family used to visit London Airport (Heathrow) for a day out.
Also used to park up near other RAF, and other, airports, can remember seeing, Avro Lancastrians and Yorks at London AP.
Also the DH110 prototype out of Hatfield.
Didn't start taking Photos till later in life, early 60's in the Far east.
Was with the Artillery, air defence. (Ack.Ack then Light air defence) so spent a lot of the time close to the RAF.
Lost most of the photos to flooding a few years ago but some have survived.
So excuse some of the state of the photos.
After leaving the forces got to know someone with a Tiger Moth and was down at Biggin Hill most weekends all year round.
And visited a lot of air-shows around the home counties.
Anyway enough of that. I'll start with some from Kuching in Malaya, our gun, then Radar was about 100 yards to the side of the runway about mid way along.
Oh yes, nearly forgot this airstrip was used by both military and civil aircraft.
And sometimes they overlapped.
Handley Page Herald and a Javelin on the same (only) runway
Army air corp Auster AOP9
Beverley
Bristol Freighter
Britannia airlines Bristol Britannia
Flying Banana the Belvedere
Hasting other side of the fence
And a change of subject our bath/shower room
The Radar that can be seen the other side of the runway, I transfered/posted to from the gun-site about half way through our Far East tour
And one for both side of this forum

We rotated between R.A.F. Kuching Borneo and R.A.F. Tengah Singapore
Both airstrips are still operational but as Civilian and Commercial airports

Some very interesting pictures there Roger, thanks for posting them.
I see you were well looked after, that shower facility was positively luxurious! |

A few more from 1963-65 at R.A.F. Kuching Borneo.
Used to arrive twice a week.
Sat in the hut one night in a storm and the wall was suddenly lit up.
On finals across the runway instead of down the runway.
Boy did he make the hut shake when he aborted with full power.
Taxiing to the end of the runway
Running up for take off

By the way all with a standard lens, we were that close to them.
You can see the drainage ditch, were we would sit, or stand, on the DC3 Photo
I have lost my favourite,
I was almost on the tarmac and took a shot of that Brit running up, WITH a streak of forked lightning looking like it was comeing from the top of the Fin. |
