Amazing link Jason.
Some of them have been publicised before and are on the way to becoming the 'urban myths' of our hobby - But several are new and unseen, at least by me!
Finding and then getting a silly offer accepted on something like this must be the stuff of dreams. Just shows that they are out there. |

There is something evocative about photographs of rusty abandoned cars. I wonder how many are still to be found?. I used to live in a place called haeringland in Norfolk. At the end of the war the hall which had been used to house officers for a nearby air base was demolished by blowing it up.Rumours still circulate that the cellars of the hall were full of old motorbikes used by dispatch riders and they are for ever sealed under the halls remains. _________________ Thirty years selling imperial hand tools for old machinery(Now happily retired). |

Haveringland Hall.
I remember this place from about the late 50's. I went camping there or very close by with my Mum and Dad and some friends. One day we went off exploring the old wartime buildings around the place. Some buildings had broken desks and chairs and wooden crates but we didn't find anything of worth. The following day the police arrived with some military police and we were told to keep out of those areas because there could still be live ammunition. As we were leaving, we passed some army trucks and soldiers were putting up a barbed wire fence and hanging "Keep Out" notices.
Some photos here.

Then there is the connection with Duncan Healey (Austin Healey Fame)

(Their geography has a slight problem)
For a brief time he worked out of an Aircraft Hanger at the nearby airfield. |

Austin A50 Cambridge sitting in a barn near me, has been there since being dragged out of a council lockup in the mid 80's. Was £400 when I spoke to the owner a couple of years ago but the price has now doubled when I asked again earlier this year. Pembrokeshire reg so a long way from home too...

A Lancaster LD10 I stumbled across on a fruit farm in rural Essex back in 2006, apparently it was family owned from new and was last on the road in 1985. No idea if it's still there or not.
Four Rover P4's on a farm in Hertfordshire, looks like the grey and blue one has been sitting for a while.
Wolseley 1500 in a front garden in Kings Langley that's apparently been there for over 20 years...
Austin A40 Farina Mk2 in the car port of a poorly kept 60's style house in Holland-on-sea, which has been off the road since 1984 according to the DVLA.
Austin 1100 in the garage of a derelict looking cottage in the Hertfordshire countryside, looks like the planks of wood have been placed over the missing door to stop it being as easily visible, so not totally forgotten about it seems.

Some photos sent over to me a few months ago .... Citroen and Rover enthusiasts looks away now ....
Firstly, a Traction Avant going to waste:
and a Rover 12 ... too far gone?
Details of their location, for anyone feeling adventurous...
"My wife, myself and two friends quite often go out for a circular country walk. Last Sunday we decided to do a walk in my Country Pub Circular Walks book, which was very local to where we live just outside Reading. The walk was a 5 mile circular around the village of Stoke Row, taking in the old Dick Turpin haunt of The Crooked Billet pub/restaurant and the Maharajas Well.
The final part of the walk brought us up out of the trees into a field at the back of the Crooked Billet that is used as an overflow car park. What we found there, I have attached pictures of, were 2 pre-war rusting hulks with weeds growing through them.
Thought you might like to see them after I had a read through your website." _________________ Rick - Admin

I particularly like the one with the wooden cabin in the background.
It will make a great study for me to paint in the winter months.. |
Back in April 2008, Jipstar posted a series of photos, one of which I commented about (see above). Although I kept a copy of the photo, I haven't yet got around to doing the painting........
Today, over 3 years later I received this e-mail from John, in Folkstone. UK.
Dear Peter,
I was just browsing on OLDCLASSICCAR forum and came across the series of photographs that includes one with a cabin in the background. You said at the time that it was a subject you’d like to paint. The post was from April 2008 and is in the section marked Photos of derelict / unrestored cars, vans and pickups!
The vehicle is one that lives out at an old gold-mining town called Bodie in California, near Mono Lake. It’s a 1937 (or thereabouts) Chevy Coupe. I visited Bodie in 2005 and lusted after that and several other cars and trucks that dot the deserted town. Bodie is preserved and maintained by the state as part of its heritage and the whole place is fascinating.
Everything metal is in a remarkable state of preservation mainly because of the altitude (8000 feet) and low humidity.
I hope this is of interest to you. It’s only about 1500 miles south-west of you so maybe you’ll visit and see it in the flesh.
John also sent me a link to Bodie Ghost Town.
Scroll down to Brodie California to view.
The vehicle in question is also on Page 3.

A search for "1937 Chevy Coupe" images confirms the identity of the vehicle. There are additional photos here.

Thanks John, for taking the time to reply. ( I have also sent an e-mail).
We intend returning to the western states during 2012 vacation and have made a note.
An example of all that is good about the internet.

Soo sad. I loved this car as a child. My Dad had a maisto model of it on his desk that I always wanted to play with! Fond memories

Found 3 interesting cars lately. Firstly a Bond Mark G with a Villiers bike engine in. Its at the garage we get our classic MOT's done but i'd never noticed it until the undergrowth subsided last winter.
Slightly newer, but have been sitting on the side of the road in a village near me in South West Wales for a long time now, a Renault Alpine A610..aren't these valuable?
And an E36 BMW M3 in front of it, i'd love this car.
