I was looking for an early rolls shadow when I ended up with my P5b,I couldn't find a tax exempt roller at sensible money and I wanted a rover after promising myself yaers ago I'd eventually buy a decent one.
I like quiet cars, the rover is pretty quiet now its all sorted with some proper insulation on the bonnet and inside, new grommets in the bulkhead and all sorts of sundry squeaks and rattle sorted.
I've never driven or been in a really sorted roller and I'm sure some of you will have driven both. So,am I missing much or anything?.Is the roller good enough that even a well sorted P5b doesn't match up and so is really "The poor mans rolls royce"?. In lots of ways it doesn't matter to me,I love the old rover and can't find anywhere to keep a rolls if I had one.
But I'm curious. _________________ Thirty years selling imperial hand tools for old machinery(Now happily retired). |

I have seen repeated references to the P5's long-lived popularity with the British monarchy and governmental figures. Maybe the P5 is a way to enjoy RR comfort and dignity without appearing too...ostentatious?
If I had a Rover I would be delighted to own and drive it. I think I would feel somewhat embarrassed to be seen behind the wheel of a Rolls (even if the car was nearly free, the only way I could afford one), as if I were "putting on airs". _________________ Mike Smith

I have a Bentley T, the equivalent of the Silver Shadow, and my son has a P5B, because we live over 200 miles apart we haven't yet had them side by side to compare, but with the Rover you can hear that beautiful V8 sound where as the Bentley is muted, on the road the Bentley is smoother, but dont expect it to go round corners like a Rover. The Bentley is a more comfortable ride but that is probably due to the Citreon inspired suspension, seats are not unalike but the Bentley has more positions due to a battery of motors that move them up/down, forward/back, but the recline is done with a lever like most other cars.
The problem of corrosion is much the same but the Rover is easier and cheaper to repair, you can expect to stop a petrol station twice as often in the Bentley. also spare parts are a lot more expensive, Would I swap it for a P5B Coupe, Yes, I think I would. |

3 litres IOE 6's are far quieter and smoother than P5B V8's - no doubt Rolls Royce had to put far more sound deadening into the Shadows when they changed over from their IOE6 to the V8. Rover did not bother adding an extra
V8 Rollers are certainly noisier outside that than their 6's and also P5 3 Litrs
I agree that a Roller/Bentley is a rich mans Rover _________________ Rover P2

Got mine running again today, enough for some test runs on the drive. One front brake stuck solid in the process, so an hour or so was spent removing the pad securing pins, and finally cracking open the bleed nipple, in order to free that corner off.
There's a bit of a misfire present, although looking at the state of the points I'm surprised it'll run at all. New points and condenser are on the list, probably a set of HT leads too.
