Hi Alistair
I have re-lined slave cylinders in stainless steel for my Morris 8. Any machine shop could carry out the task, many won't because its brake related!
You will find differing opinions on sleeving brake cylinders; some people don’t like the idea of it. However done properly there are no disadvantages, in fact by introducing a stainless steel sleeve you are improving things 2 fold; firstly it’s more resistant to corrosion; not 100% as the stainless generally used for this sort of thing has less chromium content as it machines better. Secondly the surface is harder so will resist scoring.
The biggest risk is splitting or over stressing the original cylinder when inserting the sleeve; the sleeve is an interference fit, and the amount of interference will be limited by the size and thickness of the original cylinder bore, any reputable machine shop would be able to work this out. These days there are also available a range of machining adhesives that allow less (not replace !!) interference.
Pic below is a cylinder I did together with some bleed screws and fixing bolts that I also made in stainless.

Past Parts of Bury St Edmunds did a slave cylinder and the master cylinder for me. I have done a couple of emergency stops since and no problems. _________________ 1936 Morris 8 Series 1

I have had several master and slave cylinders done by Past Parts..great service but if you feel you can re-build it yourself then do..they charge a small fortune for supplying and fitting kits after they have re-lined the cylinders. _________________ Rust Junky & oil addict. |
