Having posted a few times about gas mantles and how hard they are to get these days and if you can get them they are at least a fiver each, I say to people, use the modern tie on soft silk mantles used on the modern camping gas lamps, just a few pence and after they have burnt and shrunk look the same. A few people have said this might be dangerous advised against it, saying the modern mantles were never made to use on caravan lights and could produce harmful fumes. Well I've been using these for years and no ill effects and now with finding some 1940's new tie on mantles I can show you guys for certain this is an ok thing to do. These photo's show loose slik mantles made to fit on the caravan gas lamp rings. Just tie the string around the old ring , just below the lugs and there you are a very cheap mantle. Bottogas made all types of gas fittments for caravan and in thier day were as big as Calor Gas.
The boxes of new mantles and an old ring I had spare
The ring with the silk mantle tied on.
