Do you ever go for a run out just for the sake of having a drive, or has the cost of motoring put you off from all but essential drives out, show attendances excepted??

Me, I take the MM out for regular pootles around the lanes, but our two "moderns" are fairly uninspiring, so there's not much fun to be had driving them if I'm honest!

I got sick of driving cars until April of last year when I got rid of the car in favour of a classic. I am now doing almost twice the mileage and every mile of it is fun. I drive about as much as I can afford these days with ever increasing fuel prices but now I consider it smiles per gallon as per miles.

Like you Rob I do more mileage in the DLM than the modern
Well I did, just waiting for new wheels at the moment.
Also shopping in the DLM saves me money, not a lot of room so have to shop small, two carrier bags is the limit Wink

I regularly take the Amazon out for a circular run of about ten miles, just to get the fluids moving after it has stood for a week or so, you understand.

Most of my miles in it this year have been with the Safari on the back so it is fun to enjoy its performance and handling down some country lanes and round a few quick roundabouts.

The day I start to worry about petrol costs is the day I give up motoring and turn the Amazon into a museum piece.

I don't really like car shows so most of the miles I clock up on the old SS are just for the pleasure of driving but I don't use it as a substitute for the modern which travels three times as far on a gallon of fuel and is capable of surviving winter weather.

I must admit I've only done about 1800 miles in the SS in the last 12 months and that includes about 1100 miles on one trip over to Nothern Ireland.

I still enjoy driving the modern. See: http://www.jaguardriverforums.co.uk/showthread.php?t=291

Must admit, the Manta is only a weekend car really, although have used to commute once or twice. The family like going out in it, so we do go for drives sometimes just for the sake of it, but I find I can't drive it too long a distance at once, as I must be getting old and my right knee stiffens up. I'm tall and the seats don't quite go back far enough for me. The inconvenience is not enough to make me sell it mind!!

I prefer taking the Estate out rather than the Astra but going for a day out is too expensive. Years ago we went for a run every Sunday...not now.

Over 6,000 miles this year taking in eight countries. In this dour and depressing world we live in she restores my faith.

Yes,I sometimes take out the P5b just for the hell of it.Helps me unwind.
My favourite driving experience is the first trip after a repair and the happy feeling when you realise you've cured some irritating fault.
A while back I managed after loads of experimenting (and some good advice from this and the P5 forum) to get the gearbox to change down and come to a stop without that irritating and very common thump. I spent a pleasant half hour pottering about and stopping in total silence.
Priceless.

Over 200 miles yesterday on my 1959 5TA Triumph Speed Twin roaming the Lincolnsire Wolds. As has been said before "just for the hell of it".
Beautiful day, perhaps not to be repeated again this year. But I hope so! Off to The Brecon Beacons (Talgarth) on Friday for the weekend on the same bike, but first a club run around Derbyshire on Thursday with it.
Over 50 years old, though still 22 years younger than me. Perhaps nearly 1000 miles in 8 days. What the "hell"?
I keep it to be enjoyed!
Jim.

I do like to use the Rover P3 when I can even sometime for the weekly shop but I would be wrong if I said that the cost of petrol hadn't made me cut back the amount I've used it, at 22 miles to the gallon it can make it an expensive joy ride so its had limited use this year. I've even had to think hard about how far I travel to some shows this last year as well I'm sad to say.

Yes, I often go out for a drive just for enjoyment. I have a 60 mile route out in Oxfordshire which if I go out early is realy pleasant... And at 20 mpg I still consider £15 not bad for an hours fun.

When ever I start the P6b, for no matter what, I always take it for a short run, I tell my wife it's bad to start an old car then not let it get hot, then I bu$$er off for an hours drive. I always go down the village High St on the back leg just to hear the V8 rumble bouncing off the walls. Childish I know, but I will, 'cos I can!
