Its been a while since I posted an update about the Car Cruiser, so this brings things up to date. The double bed had been butchered by preveious owners, turing it into a dinnette area and then back into a bed. So a lot of head scratching went on to see how it was originally. Luckily we found a few photo's and got to see another Car Cruiser Clubman, so we managed to piece together how the bed/settee was originaly.
First job was to take out all the non-original woodwork, as we were doing this, some rot in the wall was discovered, so a lot more woodwork had to be removed to get at it.
Here you can see the new panels being put in place.
The original woodwork was put back and then a new frame was made up.
The seat base / storage locker taking shape.
A sliding top was then made, using some original legs we managed to find from a scraped Car Cruiser and mains electricity was put in using period sockets.
Now you can see how it all works, pulls out to make a bed, slides back to make a settee.
We were so amazingly lucky to find on e-bay a full set of gas lights from a Car Cruiser Clubman, which have been cleaned, pollished and fitted. Also fitted are some original deco, 12 volt ceiling lights.
So the old girl is coming on, at the moment we are striping all the old varnish off the interior, colouring the new panels to match and will be re-varnishing in a short time.
We have been using the caravan for some time now, ever since she was road worthy and have been doing a rolling restoration. I think this definitely keeps the interest and enthusiasm going. Next jobs to do is, seat backs, put in the period cooker, paint the ceiling, carpet and when we get some nice warm weather finish off the exterior painting. _________________ I can resist anything except temptation ! Starting to take shape and some great wood skills, keep it going. |
