This usually comes up every year, do you have a list of outstanding jobs to do on your pride 'n' joy before the good weather returns?

My '34 Morris is probably due another greasing, the oil was changed quite recently. The driver's seat needed re-securing after the miniscule self-tappers that held the runners in Rolling Eyes parted company one day as I clambered on board, so that was rectified a few days ago.

Fishing is rubbish at the moment so it looks like fettling the square 4 and fitting a brake proportioning unit to the special. The 10/4 could do with some rust treatment underneath; but I'm not looking forward to doing it. Rolling Eyes

as you know from my Alvis thread, the Alvis passed its MOT a few weeks ago, so last week I gave it a good service, just need to get the front leaf springs replaced (as they're weak) and she'll be mechanically sound for the year ahead.

I'm currently in the process of making a new dashboard for the Alvis as I'm not very happy with the one I made whilst restoring her.
I should have it finished at the weekend, then I've the task of removing all the gauges and switches to get it fitted to the car.

Not much on cars this winter,I've had a few visits to the hospital and when fit will be looking at moving.
I fancy a place with some ground,a garage or workshop and maybe one needing a lot of work to keep me occupied.

Car has been laid up for a few months, since August, think I posted about the front wheels almost collapsing and having to have a new set made.

Anyway I started to do a better job on the bodywork.
In certain light you could see the lack of prep. last time.

Removed the wings, lights and anything else I could find, started on the rubbing down, bit of panel beating and filling.

Then had a heart op. and the medication has left me with no energy and out of breath all the time.
So the work so far that would have been a few days has taken months.
But things are slowly getting to the painting stage.

Have started to do at least ten minutes each day in the garage
Plan to make and fit solar heating to the garage, both air and water, found some clever DIY plans, and the roof is in the sun from dawn till dusk.
One idea needs aluminium drink cans, beer cans seem the right size Laughing . so have been making a few empties Wink

I'm awaiting the return of my 1.5 from a re-spray and have a few jobs including:
Make and fit new door cards
Remove and re-furb dashboard and door caps
Fit sound deadening
Fit new carpets

But before that I have to clear garage of the junk that has accumulated whilst the car has been away; I've acquired two engines (partly dismantled), a gearbox, assorted halfshafts, brake parts and trim bits; all of which need identifying, cleaning and put away - somewhere...

If you can't find new shoes then this company will reline your old ones or quite possibly have some in stock.

I think I may be pulling my gearbox apart...

My 2nd gear synchro cones appear to have seized!

Has anyone else had this problem and if so were you able to
unseize them without dismantling the gearbox?

The story is as follows:

I don't take my car out on the salted roads in winter so
each month I run the engine up to temperature and put it in
gear and slip the clutch a little just to stop the clutch
plate from gluing itself to the flywheel.

Well when I tried to engage 1st gear the other day the
clutch had glued itself and I couldn't engage 1st gear so I
tried 2nd. This freed the clutch but I then found that
regardless of what I did to the gear lever I was still in
2nd gear!

I can move my first gear wheel into neutral and I can move
it forward partially into 2nd. I say partially because the
dog teeth are not aligned to permit engagement. What I can't
do is move into first gear. I can wiggle the 2nd gear synchro
hub slightly on the mainshaft so there isn't seizure there.
What appears to have happened is that the 2nd gear synchro
cones have welded themselves together. I've tried prising
them apart and also tried to wedge them apart with a couple
of cold chisels. I've also tried this at various parts
around the circumference.

For the most recent attempt to free it I jacked up a rear
wheel applied handbrake and tried to have the engine torque
twist it free but all that happens is that the handbrake
slips. I tried applying foot brake pressure too but just
stalled the engine and I felt that was quite enough torque
anyway.

Oh, another thing I tried was to apply torque in reverse. I
slid the reverse gear into engagement and tried applying
torque with the starting handle. I didn't want to use engine
torque as I was fearful of knocking teeth off.

Anyway, this didn't get me anywhere either.

Well, the horrible realisation that I would next have to remove the gearbox and strip and rebuild it pushed me to try a little harder. It struck me that cold chisels really weren't the right shape to apply force where I needed it. What I needed was something that was not sharpened to a blade edge but rather a "blunt instrument". I made said blunt instrument from a piece of 1/8" x 1" bar with a radius cut into its end.
Photo shows hub in seized state.
I hammered this in on one side then turned the engine over one turn and hammered it in the other side. Then with a little axial bashing the cones released their grip! Smile

The next time that my clutch centre plate gets penetrated by my rusting flywheel I will not be trying to engage second gear at 1500 rpm but something more like 500, and my new tool is going to get carried in my car's tool kit just in case I should encounter this horrible problem again whilst out on the open road. Perish the thought.

Peter
