Last Friday I went along to help dad move his VdP over to their new house. I'd forgotten how well these drive, especially once wound up a bit Smile

Some pics:

That's a nice looking car Rick. Was it based on the Austin 1800?

Julian.

It's the "posh" version of the Austin/Morris 1100/1300 (ADO16) range, Keef will be along soon with the specifics I'm sure Smile

Very nice indeed!

Is it Damask red?

A local owner has a 1973 L registered example in white which he has owned for many years. I'll take some photos of it one day and post them on here.
I had the use of a dark blue J registered example for a week many years ago. It was an automatic with the four speed gearbox and I enjoyed the experience.

They really are superb cars and I believe the rarest ones now are the 1100cc early examples.

Coincidentally only a mile or so from where mum and dad are moving to, another VdP, painted in the identical shade, sometimes appears.

I see it is Derby registered, if i had not gone to live over in Wales for the early 70's i could have done the PDI on your Dad's car.
I well remember as a young apprentice, doing my initial 6 month stint in the lube bay at Kennings. This was across the road from the new stock storage building. One morning in 1962, a transporter arrived, loaded with all these completely new cars. I hadn't known anything new was coming, and all the badges were taped over as the new Morris 1100, had yet to be announced. They were, as you know, generally a great success, and eventually, the range extended through MG, Wolseley, Austin etc and of course, the Vanden Plas. I can still smell the leather! Happy days.

That's it I remember now, the 1800 looked similar but was a bigger car - difficult to tell from the photo.

I remember that they did drive nicely, very firm footed and stable, even when driven fairly hard. Courtesy of the hydrogas suspension I think?

Clutches were so nice to do due to plenty of working space around the engine - minis were an utter nightmare by comparison!

I think the former owner (he bought it new) was ex- Rolls-Royce aero engines in Derby.

Very lovely and vary rare. it seems that only 46 1100s exist and 143 1300s - in manual form. I just get more and more hooked on www.howmanyleft.com!

Hmm I think I'd take some of the those figures with a pinch of salt, interesting though. Dad's is an auto, a bit slow to wind up but fun once it's going Smile

I believe some may be down as Austin Princess 1100, so "buried" in :-

So less than 80 cars.

Guess how many are still on DVLA's system as untaxed?

Give up?

13, 000. That's not a mistype - thirteen thousand!

And don't forget a number of the better examples were shipped over to Japan in then80s and 90s when they became a bit of a cult thing over there. Presumably they are still there...

Didn't the Japanese have to scrap their cars after 2 or 3 years, to keep the " economy " going ???
