Hello everyone,
I have been dropping in to look through the forums over the past few months and have finally joined.
I am currently spending Friday afternoons restoring my much loved 1987 Toyota MR2 T-Bar. It was my daily driver for several years until it failed the MoT due to rust in the floor pan. I decided to take it off the road and repair it myself - that was about 3 years ago! This is what it looked like in happier times:
It always looked good but I have since realized it was falling apart underneath.
Since then I have:
Nearly stripped it completely;
Patched a few holes in the floor;
Rebuilt both inner wheel arches and fitted a new O/S rear quarter panel;
Rebuilt the O/S inner and outer sill and the rear panel;
Stripped the underside, repainted and resealed it;
Stripped and repainted the suspension and a myriad other parts;
Started re-plating most of the nuts, bolts and fittings;
Repainted the front of the chassis and engine bay; and
Started putting bits back together.
So my attempt at a home repair has become a full nut and bolt restoration
Here a a few of the 600+ pictures I have cluttering up my computer to show how my first resto project has been coming on:
Slowly putting things back together now although the engine and gearbox are still on the 'to do' list. Reckon I might be done by 2014 at this rate.
Perhaps a bit too modern for some of you but I love 80's cars and growing up in the far east has left me with a love of old Japanese metal - it's just a shame they are rarely galvanized!
Anyway, Hi there |

Hi welcome to the forum.
I too like the small Japanese sports cars.
Nice to see your restoration.
Hope you don't mind me asking what part of the Far East did you grow up in.
I spent some time out there in the 1960's. |

Thanks for the welcome guys.
Love the MX-5, great cars and a future classic for sure. My sister had a Eunos import until recently. I repaired a rust hole ahead of the rear wheel for her and it came out really well so I was quite chuffed about that as it was my first proper repair job. Any excuse for a pic
I grew up in Hong Kong (1973-89) but not been back there since 1991-ish. I was 4 years old when we moved there so ended up spending all my school life out there surrounded by Datsuns, Toyotas and Hondas etc. hence my love of Japanese cars.
My dream would be a 240Z but values are taking them out of reach now I do love the Mk1 MR2 though. |
