This morning it was quite bright and as the estate is due mot next month I checked out the front end and greased the trunions (as you do ) everything fine. Went in for my coffee and a roll at lunchtime and it started to rain.It has rained on and off all day so I watched the golf. Hopefully tomorrow I will check the back brakes. They shoukd be ok as everything was changed last year. Cool Cool

Today, or rather this evening, I had a tinker in the garage, read up a bit on the oil specified on the Dodge tourer, and left said lubricant draining into an old bowl. That's the sub-total of today's garage activities.

Cleaned out the carburettor, repaired a leaking exhaust joint and put the battery on charge, looking like a new one may be needed soon! And of course got utterly filthy, but you probably guessed that anyway...

Overhauling the front brakes on my Bentley T, between the rain, and the need for spare parts, its taken over a week. What started out as sticky calipers, ended with a complete reseal with a couple of new pistons, new pads, new pipework, drain & clean the hydraulic reservoir, check out a non working brake warning light, and now I am waiting for delivery of cork sheet so I can make a gasket for the reservoir lid, then fingers crossed, it will be top up the fluids and bleed the brakes.

I carried on withthe slow rebuild of my 1931 BSA fourwheeler, I decided to make the two upper support struts for the rear wings which were missing.

I brazed two washers to the end of a piece of pipe I found in the scrap/future spares pile.

The problem was cutting the angles correctly each end, to meet the body and the mudguard. I was eventually happy and brazed the washers to the pipe, sadly they were at an angle and kept moving.

Finally managed to carry out the job. sprayed sprayed them with tough black and left them to dry. took about five hours. As I am retired that was it for the day.

Much of the time was spent removing and replacing the wheels and mudguards as I measured up and drilled holes to accept the fixings.

Sadly retirement seems to slow you down, you lose the sense of urgency of full time workers.

Last weekend we had visitors, one of whom is a major player from the world of the MG SA and WA. Needless to say there is some friendly competitive banter between us re the relative merits of our breeds.

Well, I must confess that I seriously let the side down. We started with a tour of the sights of Edinburgh and then followed this with a drive down the East Lothian coast. A goodly smell of petrol after negotiating right hand bends was the my first bloomer. (I hadn't clipped the filler cap properly.) Then on traveling out of Edinburgh I detected a very slight misfire. This got progressively worse although it didn't prevent us from maintaining normal road speeds. On our way back from North Berwick I did stop briefly just to check that I hadn't lost my points gap but that looked fine and we needed to get back to Edinburgh for the schedule of evening activities so I shut the bonnet and carried on.

The following day I tried shorting each plug in turn and very strangely the engine continued to misfire but no single plug made any difference. I then changed the coil, then the condensor, the points and lastly the plugs, all to no avail. Removing the float chambers and main jet assemblies came next and again no problems were apparent but no improvement gained either.

I then thought I should check the earthing of my points only to discover that there was rather higher resistance than I was expecting. This puzzled me because I had some years ago bridged the earth connection for the condensor.

I should explain that SS cars have a distributor base plate that is a Bakelite moulding and the contact breaker and condensor earthing is invisible and internal to the Bakelite. Later cars simply have a metal base plate and won't cause their owners to suffer my embarrassment.

When I had bridged the earthing in the past I had assumed that the only weakness would be the link to the distributor body. Clearly I was wrong as my condensor was securely grounded by my old link wire but the points were not.

I now have a continuous link wire connecting the distributor body screw to both the condensor and points frame and normal running has been restored if not my dented pride!

Had some trouble with the blue mini not starting, just the clicking of the solenoid , cleaned all connections, started, put back on what I had dismantled tightening all, turn the key nothing Evil or Very Mad
Then noticed a wire from the solenoid hanging loose, the wire from the ignition switch, the soldered bit had broken, so for an easy fix, went bought a new solenoid and everything back to normal!!
this took best part of 3 hours though!!

I've been on a VERY MAJOR TASK for the last fortnight......I'm not going to tell you what it is yet though Laughing
although I will say theres a lot of polishing to do! and it isn't polishing paint!

all to get done within the next 2 weeks for the hebden bridge car show Rolling Eyes

once I've got it all done (hopefully in the next few days), I'll get some photos posted up Wink

Only had an hour or so "play" time this evening, so removed the strainer and oil pump pick-up from the Dodge's sump, and gave it a good scrub in some old petrol, then left it hanging up to dry while I dug out a suitable gasket for when it's re-fitted.

Checked and adjusted the back brakes today.Everything is working sowe are ready for mot next week. Then i cut thr grass and cleaned and painted the wheels on my Suzuki Alto. I am really enjoying this thread and its great to read what everyone is doing and its also very informative and hopefully it will keep going for a long time because our cars always need a wee bit of work now and then. Cool Cool

Put my Sprite out on the drive to give me room to make some edging boards for the garden. Wife is sick of the front garden looking like 'Steptoe's Yard.' The front garden still looks like Steptoe's yard... but with the addition of a Sprite.
