I picked this article up off the BBC News. It's a press article, so it must be true, ?

I know this forum has mentioned thefts of some older vehicles so what's the view on the Cortina age vehicles. Anyone who had vehicles of this age will know how easy it was to open them, start them and drive off to a wood or quarry.

In this instance I think it's genuine enough. I've previously heard about a couple of the thefts mentioned from other sources - this is pretty old "news" by the way - and we know it's been a problem with older cars. As 80's cars are appreciating in value the scrotes are just chasing the money.

A similar thing can happen with relatively modern cars. There was a story a while back about Vauxhalls parked outside around the Luton area having parts stripped off overnight, and something similar happened in a quiet car park in Abergavenny not so long ago. The only difference is that modern cars are harder to steal outright so only the easily removed bits are taken. These days Ebay and the like provide a ready market for car parts, particularly those bits that tend to get damaged by bad drivers.

There has also been the suggestion in classic Ford circles that due to a Cortina only Banger Race coming up this year Cortina thefts have risen. There is no evidence to tie to these sorts of events, but it does seem slightly unusual that there are spikes in the thefts of certain models. The trim parts not required would also then make a profit on certain auction sites.

This thread reminded me of an incident I knew of back in the early 70s. A good friend had decided that he deserved a decent car after years of old bangers. So he ended up buying a brand new 2 door Honda Accord, his first ever new car.

A couple of weeks in to ownership he found it one morning sitting in his private parking spot with the driver`s door ajar. All looked normal until he spotted that all the interior carpets had been stolen!

His insurer did not want to know. Honda wanted a lot of money for a replacement set despite them not being anything like super quality. It was beyond his means. But being a resourceful man he popped off to the local carpet shop. He asked if they supplied and fitted carpets. Oh yes sir, he was told. We would be delighted to pop round for an estimate.

He showed them the car...... He explained his predicament. And incredibly they took the job on. The carpets in that Accord were better than Honda ever fitted and at a much lower cost too.

Immediately after the carpets were in a decent car alarm was fitted too.

I've seen reports, via Facebook groups set up to highlight vehicle thefts, that quite a few Ford (Escorts, Granadas, Cortinas et al) are being stolen at the moment, more than is usual. Escorts are probably being targeted for their value - either complete or in parts - while the fate of the others is less clear.
