Along with the Previous comments, pleased you have found the problems. Just wondering, have you sent the engine to a specialist?, or a local engineer. There is a company that will supply all/most of the engine parts including their own rods that are full journal width, and use an American shell. They also supply complete "short" engines off the shelf. _________________ KA

I have an old spark plug with the porcelain part removed and an adaptor welded on that takes an airline.
It can be screwed into a cylinder that is then pressurised via the air line.
By getting the piston at TDC and introducing air you can track down where it's leaking by listening at the carb (inlet valve) exhaust (exhaust valve) and filler cap (bores) a blown head gasket might result in bubbles in the rad. |

Hope all is well with the engine build. Just put mine back together after removing the sporty cam, and returning to the standard version. It was interesting going back to the standard followers and removing the adjustable versions, and yes, I do grind the base of the valve finishing off with a fine stone. By measuring all followers before starting, and all valve lengths the correct clearances can be achieved by pick and mix method, at least until you get to the end one or two. I have spare followers and valves so I tend to measure and select from my stock.
I did a compression test before stripping, all around 120psi, but popped the pistons out to sere how they were settling down after last years re-bore. Checked and cleaned/polished all the valves, reground the valves into their seats, cleaned head and block face then re-assembled. Checked the compressions and three around the 150psi mark, one at 90psi. I followed the advice from an earlier comment adapting a spark plug to take an air line. Engine at TDC, i pour clean oil down the plug hole, pressurised the cylinder, and watched the oil running from the inlet port. Upon stripping, and closer inspection using a magnifying glass, I found a flat spot in the seat. Re-cut seat, ground in valve, head on and bingo, compression at 165psi in that cylinder. Put more oil in the other cylinders to do a true comparison and they are all at 165psi, so time up radiator etc and the engine runs a treat. I will have a road test as soon as the weather improves.
How have you got on? _________________ KA
