Probably in common with many people I am stuck with a double garage about 16 feet square. I was just wondering how other people fit in two cars and still have space for a workbench and storage? Where do I put this so as to have least obstruction. |

Hi
Here's an idea to start with.
Not many vehicles over 6ft including mirrors so how about bench endways on from centre of rear wall and shelving across back wall high enough to be clear of bonnet/boot depending on which way you have driven in.
Might even be room for more shelving along the sides and leave centre clear for pedestrian ingress/egress.
Keep shelving as narrow as practical broad shelves encourage overstacking like deep kitchen cuboards, awkward to get stuff from the back without knocking something off from the front.

Hi Penman, putting the bench sideways is an excellent idea, I'm going to do it , it also allows you to work round a job Thanks for the tip.
I have just bought a load of these stacking crates, they are used industrial nylon jobs, really tough, not like the B&Q ones that crack at the sight of manifold!
Gives me a bit more flexibility than shelves would, and keeps stuff together.

hi Dave
Do those crates have a cutout on one of the long sides?
If so, that would give you even more flexibility as some items could be removed without having to shuffle the crates about. _________________ Bristols should always come in pairs.

I am also impressed by that lateral thinking regarding bench position. Many thanks. |

Penmans plans look ideal. How high are you going to make your garage. Depending on the height you could make storage space high up.It also depends on the amount of spares you have. I just wish I had the room. My garage is a 16x9 with my bench at the bottom, my toolboard on thr right hand side and my spares on the left hand side and the marina in the runway. Its not ideal but I prefer working outside as you get more room. But Penmans plans look fine. _________________ The Clan Chieftain |

They don't but they could quite easily I see your thinking, have them like big bins.

Hi Dave
It has the added advantage of making the ID'ing of items in each crate easier.
I don't know where the idea of the central bench came from, I just saw the OP and the width struck me as usable, saving length so that the car/s could be undercover whichever end you wanted to get under. _________________ Bristols should always come in pairs.
