ok so my morris eight is going on tomorrow to get 're vind' (MOT) but I just found a leak where the exhaust manifold bolts on to the exhaust. i only fixed it 2 or 3 test runs ago and the last time she was running it wasn't leaking, i checked when I started her up. Am just wondering if the RTV i used would have been rated hot enough, or if it may have broken down with the temp?

Hi Matt,

Do you have an objection to using normal exhaust sealant?

Peter

If you have the correct components for the pipe/manifold join, it should be satisfactory with just the standard triangular copper-asbestos gasket, which I usually just coat on both sides with Copaslip or similar.

If the pipe flare is too small, allowing the end of the pipe to sit below the face of the flange that bolts to the manifold, there should be an insert in the shape of a very flat cone to close the gap. Either the pipe flare, or the cone insert if fitted, must press into the gasket when the flange is nipped up.

Use exhaust sealant if you must, but it shouldn't really be necessary.

Hi Peter, I didnt know you could get stuff just for sealing exhausts Razz
Richard, that cone you mention is fairly rusted so wont seal properly.
Still managed to get it through without any problems there, however apparently if they find a bit of rust between the chassis and running bord it has to be fully checked out by a repair certifier Sad
Thanks anyway guys Smile
