I am very fortunate to have a generous brother who is a member. Although not really my sort of thing this last weekend of classic car racing was amazing. There were some static displays and you could get really close to all manner of fast and very valuable cars. My first photo is somewhat less exotic but no less lovely. |

It was a jacket and tie job Rick, everyone looked fairly flush. Great fun though and unbelievable range of cars, noises, speed and smells. they really push those old cars. |

When I restored my first Jaguar MK2 ( all work carried out by myself) I went along to some Jaguar club events and race meetings..
I found it very tweed jacket and cravat territory , especially the Jaguar Drivers Club, XK Owners Club and E Type Owners.
A lot of these folk are cheque book owners who are into classic cars for the social ranking.
Their events and tours are very expensive to take part in, everything is five star.
Goodwood is an example.
I find the Silverstone Classic very affordable and good quality for the normal classic car owner.
I can organise a trip to France or Germany, stay in lovely family run hotels, eat very good home cooked food, drink excellent German beer and drive round the Nurburgring for a third of the cost of their club tours.

Nice starting line-up of Jaguar XK150, Ferrari 250GT, Aston Martin DB2 etc, etc.
I agree that there must be more accessible and affordable events than this one, but exclusivity apart, it is a fabulous gathering of vehicles.
I was surprised at just how expensive they are and that is partly down to the fact that they are literally investment vehicles. But good on the owners for letting them be thrashed by very enthusiastic, professional drivers...every one of them grinning from ear to ear after the races and complete gentlemen with it. |

Ford Cortina GT 1963
I surprised myself by getting best enjoyment from the racing between 1960s and 1970s saloon cars such as these ones.

Funny how some people jump to the conclusion that simply because a car is valuable the owners are minted "cheque book owners" Most people congratulate the owners of million pound cars allowing them to be raced very competitively so just be pleased they are not shut away in some dark hanger somewhere because that's where they'd be if they were simply investment cars.
I was at the 72nd Members Meeting this weekend. It was a fantastic weekend of hard racing with everything from 70s saloon cars, Can Am big bangers through GT40s and a grid full of 25 Bugattis. Something for everyone at a circuit that really suits historic racing
Silverstone by comparison is a concrete jungle with tarmac roads no go areas and chain link fencing everywhere. |

Funnily enough my wife will come with me to Goodwood and she enjoys Brands but as soon as I mention Silverstone she says, "Go on your own." |

Goodwood had a lovely atmosphere and that was partly down to the fairly even numbers of women and men and also a lot of children and teenagers. I must also mention that there were women drivers. |

Indeed, Gillian Goldsmith, who is an ARDS instructor and wife of AMOC chairman John Goldsmith was one in the DB4GT and Nick Mason's wife Annette was another on a Bugatti. There were several others.
p.s. great photo of the Ferraris |
