Hi
My current exhaust is of normal looking diameter (1 1/2 - 2" ?) from the downpipe to about 6 inches past the silencer box. It then has welded on a pipe about the thickness of my thumb!
This setup sounds nice and sporty, but I was going to replace it in case it was restricting "performance". Then I read somewhere that the peashooter is the correct type of exhaust?
Does any one know or have an opinion about this - should I replace it with a larger bore?, is there any point? Will it be quieter?

Originally the pipe from the silencer rearwards was of small diameter, and it's unlikely that you'd notice any difference in performance if you changed to a larger one.

What I would say is that your set-up, as far as can be seen in the picture, is not original. It's much too low down, and the bracket's certainly not correct.

The pictures below show the correct arrangement. Note how the pipe is tucked up well out of harm's way for its entire length. The tail pipe emerges immediately below the rear wing with minimal clearance. The pipe shown is of slightly larger diameter than original, though not enough to affect the bracket clamp.

The silencer in the first picture is somewhat longer than standard because I could not find an acceptably quiet standard-length box; that aside, the arrangement shown is per original. I doubt the tailpipe size has any influence upon exhaust noise; the silencer is much more likely the culprit. Morris Eights make quite enough racket without adding a noisy exhaust.

Richard

Thanks for your reply and pictures goneps, they are really most helpful. As the peashooter does not seem original , or in the right place, I think I will replace it with standard bore exhaust following the same route as yours
Regards
