In 1961 Practical Motorist magazine ran a competition to win a 'Golden Carburetter'

Could anyone tell me for which Make/Model car this was designed for. I contacted Zenith directly but apparently their records did not extend back that far. The serial number reads: 30VEI F1436
It is a most unusual item as i suspect no other exists in unused condition.

Hi Bilharzia,
The carburettor pictured in the Practical Motorist looks quite similar to the twin Zenith 36WIP3 carbs that were standard equipment in the Sunbeam Rapier Series III that I owned many years ago.
From a very quick Google it looks as if the 30VEI was used on the Austin 7 Speedy models but is no doubt used in other makes too.

I assume that the people listed received a gift of a gold painted carburettor from Zenith and that each was specific to their make and model of car. It's highly unlikely that each received a 30VEI.

I was led to believe it was for a Hillman Minx. The more I examined carburetter photographs for said car the less I believed this was the case. Even the original manufacturer was unsure despite intact serial number. It was only for my interest really. Thank you for taking the time to respond to my post |

The 30VEI was used on a vast range of vehicles and stationary engines; the F1436 is the significant number. Unfortunately I don't have details of that particular version.
Pre-war the 30VEI was indeed used on the Austin Nippy and Speedy, but it was also used on the Austin Ten, and various Singers, Jowetts, Standards and Triumphs. Post war it was still widely used on Hillman, Singer, Standard, etc. I have one which I acquired thinking it was an Austin Nippy carb, but it turned out it was for some post war stationary engine, and unfortunately the differences are not just jet and choke sizes, some of the internal drillings are different too! _________________ in the garage: 1938 Talbot Ten Airline

Thanks for that link.
A quick skeg through, seems the 30VEI Zenith mainly appeared on pre-WW2 engines....some goods vehicles, mainly Austins of various sizes. _________________ Dellow Mk2, 1951 built, reg 1952.
