Driving Aids Development Corporation (DADC), the Northern Virginia-based hand control manufacturer, is pleased to announce the crowd funding effort to restore a 1952 Hudson Hornet convertible.
When Eugene Smith retired from the Post office after 40 years, he had no idea what little time he had left on his feet. After raising a family, serving in the Air Force, computerizing the town Post Office, volunteering with recent parolees, and serving his local synagogue, he was excited to invest some of his retirement years in restoring his first love - his 1952 Hudson Hornet.
Then he had a stroke. It left him paralyzed on his left side.
“His dream to ride in that car again never dimmed,” said his daughter Cheryl Smith, “and everyone agreed that it was the Hudson that kept his spirit alive.”
On a sunny day in May, Gene was buried with a picture of his beloved Hudson. For good measure, his son-in-law, Lee Perry, threw a rear wheel bearing into Gene's grave before it was filled in.
Now, DADC is picking up where Gene left off; his restoration plan in hand, and all of the parts categorized, friends, family and DADC are now attempting to honor his memory by completing the Hudson’s restoration.
“We plan to complete the restoration,” said DADC owner Lee Perry, “And install a set of hand controls so disabled drivers and pedal pushing drivers alike can have an opportunity to take this legendary car for a spin.”
