When I was a young (er) lad they were building some houses not far from our estate and I had to walk past each day on my way home from school. When they knocked down an old shed on the property it revealed a lovely original green 1950's Austin A55/60 pick up. After a week or so she was gone, my father being interested in these type of things stopped in one afternoon and enquired about it only to be told it was taken straight to the scrapyard! This was back in 1991-2, such a shame but to the developer it was just part of the site clearance. _________________ Various Rootes Vehicles. |

I never owned or knew anyone who had a Vanguard. I came across this picture some time ago, and, if I was thinking about a "Classic" pickup I like the look of this and the colour.

Was that Vanguard a factory build? I had not heard of them. |

This is what I read about them.
"Standard Vanguard Phase III Pickup 1958. Pickups (or 'Utes') were only sold in Australia and New Zealand and were produced at Standard Australia" |

If I recall correctly the Vanguard car could have either a 4 or 6 cylinder engine. In Oz I suppose the 6 was the chosen one. They tended, very sensibly in my opinion, to like larger engines. |

There has never been such a thing as a Jaguar commercial vehicle leave alone a pick up.
I saw a photograph of on one pickup conversion in one of Nigel Thorley's books on the the Jaguar Mark 2 but here is a photograph or two of an USA "customisation" as they would call it of work in progress of a Mark 2 Jaguar into a pick up.

It will certainly be rare when it's complete. _________________ Starting Handle Expert

I own one of only 8 known in the uk mk3 Cortina bakkies, these where factory built in sa I've owned it since the early 90's
, approx. 30,000 where built the first 4500 at Dagenham (they kept around a doz as hacks on the site none are known to survive), daily I use a 54 plate verte tempest.
known in its homeland as a ford AU3 falcon ute its a 4.0 S6 auto with factory lpg (no petrol system).
overseas stuff inc mk3-4 escort bakkies (sa) , mk3 fiesta onwards (sa & south America) bakkies (called bantam).
paykan hunter (india)
Vauxhall corsa (sa & southamerica).
Mercedes (70's style) can't remember what there called make/model (south America)
Austin Cambridge (A55/60 shape & riley) again can't remember make/model (again south America).
a fibreglass bodied chevette pickup was I beleave also made in south America.
there where a small number of maestro pickups built/converted.
I think gaydon has one of the handful of metro pickups built.
on the van front I beleave a handful of ADO 16 & 105E est style vans where made, allways thought the the ADO 16 & allegro along with the HB/C viva would have made good looking pickups.
I beleave someone in the 105e club has a replica kennex pickup.
they also did similar conversions on mk1 escort vans with I beleave one known survivor. |

cheers some great stuff there didn't know the corcel was avl as a pickup & with 4wd.
allways thought it strange that ford never sold the mk3-4 Cortina & escort/fiesta pickups here??
esp with the models & company popularity at the time.
when the sold the P100 mk5 Cortina shape?? |
