I wish to purchase a traditional 12v voltage contol box (not electronic)
Holden sell them like this:
http://www.holden.co.uk/displayproduct.asp?sg=1&pgCode=084&sgName=Electrical&pgName=Control+Boxes&agCode=0450&agName=Control+Boxes%2FRegulators&pCode=RF95
for £105
or like this:
http://www.holden.co.uk/displayproduct.asp?sg=1&pgCode=084&sgName=Electrical&pgName=Control+Boxes&agCode=0450&agName=Control+Boxes%2FRegulators&pCode=37182
for £26.92
Apart from the expensive one having a few more "A" terminals is there difference in what they do?
I wish to pair it with a Lucas C40 dyno. Will the cheaper one do the job?
Will the more expensive one be that much better made?
Thanks
Mike

Hi Mike

Both are control box's; they do more than regulate the voltage, the cheaper RB106 is technically better than the RF95 and will work with the C40 dynamo. It would just look odd if fitted to a pre war vehicle.

The later RB106 on are temperature compensated voltage control and current too in RB110 on. This means in theory better charge when its cold. My 1938 Rover P2 with its RF91 regulator seems no less reliable or better than charged than our P5 with its RB340 or our P4 with RB310.

They are all correct for the period though and virtually interchangeable fusing sections apart but would require careful setting up

I always understood that both were essentially the same thing, but the RF95 incorporates a fuse box. Holden's claim that the RF95 is their manufacture but make no such claim for the other one. If you do substitute an RB106 for an RF95 you do need to provide a fusing solution too.

The RF95 is not temp compensated though I doubt this really matters in practice these days - RB106 is but apart from lack of the 2 basic fuses (which are not adequate anyway) it is the same and comes with Spade or Screw terminals
